It says the picture is improperly vertically stretched ... but I wonder if maybe that was intended as part of the effect of going near a black hole?

Anyone know for sure?

They touch upon this in the DVDBeaver BD review:

Quote:
"This release is still vertically stretched. Maybe on encoding the original 1080p master for the last special edition they just scaled vertically to fit 1.85:1 into 1.78:1, but maybe there is another explanation.

You can tell its stretched in the corridor shot and the screen graphics which should be circular, but look like horizontally narrow ovals instead.
The stretching was not there in the original DVD releases nor in the European DVD releases.

It seems to have occurred when making the last US DVD special edition where this stretching was first appeared. Now the stretching seems to have carried over to the USA blu-ray release."

The stretching is really not noticeable unless one really looks for it. I think most fans of the movie will be satisfied with the picture quality. It looks very good at times for a catalog title.

Man...I started to read that site posted by the OP of defects in BDs...had to stop reading it.

I do NOT WANT to know where they are cause then I'm gonna be looking for them and it's going to ruin my viewing experience :/

I guess it sounds lame, but I'd rather be an ostrich with my head in the ground than to worry about defects that I probably won't notice if I stay ignorant.

I'd be willing to bet half of the stuff that turns up here (as far as blu-ray
imperfections) would go unnoticed by most of us...

I consider myself a huge horror buff and nothing phases me in the slightest when it comes to horror nowadays (I consider myself desensitized and immune to being scared).

...watched this movie in its entirety for the first time a few months back and had to sleep with the light on for a few days after. I was seriously disturbed by this film and doubt I could ever watch it again.

I rented this release a few months ago. I never noticed any stretching. The only complaint I had was that sometimes there's a bit of dust on the print that gets distracting once in awhile. Still a great transfer, though.
