Default Event Horizon

Watched this last night and have got to say it was without a shadow of a doubt the best transfer to Blu I have watched. No grain on show at all, it's as if the film was shot yesterday!

No details on the back of the box but would be interested in seeing some of the technical details on this release.

Well done Paramount.

Really? I never owned the dvd, so cant compare the 2.. Its a nice transfer but I have seen movies better than that! Are you referring to the difference in PQ between dvd and BD, or the BD compared to other BD?

Been thinking of picking this one up. I love the 'sci-fi / horror' genre and this was a pretty good one.

Is the UK and US version on blu the same? Or are there differences in transfer, audio tracks or subtitles?

I go by this review. I love Event Horizon but I am not sure it is region free so I wait for the time being.

I can confirm that it is region free, the version I own is the US one.

@ Niels - In comparison to the DVD I would stick with my original statement, against other Blu .... I don't own every Blu out there so can't compare against all, however compared to those that I own, this is truly impressive. Looking at the review from highdef - 'faces look pinched and stretched' I cant really say this was that noticable ...

I won't argue that it was a good/bad transfer since I haven't seen the Blu yet, but I will say that the absence of grain does not automatically mean that it is a great transfer. Grain is intentional more often than not and can be great at resolving detail in darker scenes.

it is in the gold tier in this thread:

i saw it, and would agree that the PQ was fairly good...not the best blu has to offer, but no complaints for a catalog title!

It's a great transfer for color and detail and such, but the vertically distorted picture distracts me to no end. I seem to be really sensitive to that kind of thing, so don't think you'll automatically be as annoyed by it, but you might want to rent it first to make sure you can live with it like that.

you guys overseas must have a much better transfer than the one released here in the states, because i was very unimpressed with my copy. i did notice some grain, and overall PQ didn't seem like much of an improvement over the DVD. maybe i'm just picky but if i spend $30 on a blu-ray and it isn't optimal quality similar to recent products from Warner Bros. or Lionsgate i'm disappointed.

<~~~~Bought the BD.....

I loved this movie from day 1. I had the SE DVD and made a comparison before I gave it away and kept the BD.

I thought that the BD was a very solid transfer overall. There is some slightly noticeable grain, but other than that, a great catalog title that was given the appropriate attention.

Anyone that says otherwise is crazy.

I am in the same group. The movie looks outstanding, and I did not notice any issues with the framing.

I agree as well. It's a must own for any horror/sci-fi fan.

I would buy this if it wasn't stretched vertically. I want the correct aspect ratio. Same with The Truman Show.

Why would they stretch it vertically?
I can't think of a logical reason to do so.

They ****ed up. Plain and simple.

It's pretty common knowledge. This is one such example:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...9&postcount=38

It's not stretched by a huge margin but it still isn't correct. I'll spend my money elsewhere until a correct version is released.

lol. Did you miss this part of the review?

NOTE: Carl in email tells us: "This release is still vertically stretched. Maybe on encoding the original 1080p master for the last special edition they just scaled vertically to fit 1.85:1 into 1.78:1, but maybe there is another explanation.

You can tell its stretched in the corridor shot and the screen graphics which should be circular, but look like horizontally narrow ovals instead.
The stretching was not there in the original DVD releases nor in the European DVD releases.

It seems to have occurred when making the last US DVD special edition where this stretching was first appeared. Now the stretching seems to have carried over to the USA blu-ray release.' (Thanks Carl!)

Whats next? You people going to tell me that The Truman Show hasn't been stretched horizontally on Blu-ray!? Paramount needs to stop this practice.
