I enjoyed I Robot also. Would be more than happy to have a 3D version. Seems like a great choice to me for 3D. Can't think of many fast cuts that would make it hard to perceive depth, plus the very white and futuristic design aesthetic should lend itself perfectly to 3d

As a 2D movie, I liked I, Robot, but I'm going to need a demo before I would even consider buying this. Watching but a conversion done by human artists is one thing, but blindly purchasing one done by a computer program is a whole different story. JVC's technology must be really promising or else Fox wouldn't be on board. However, I'm still not fully convinced that this situation won't turn out to be the equivalent of all those fake German 3D releases.

It would be cool to see this in 3D, if the movie was done right when converting to 3D for blu ray release. So many good movies they've attempted to convert to 3D and ended up screwing up a good movie. But it would be cool to see this in a good 3D format.

I may be wrong, but I think the original poster actually means the movie "Robot" and slightly misremembered the actual title.

okay. That was confusing. My book of 3d movies lists a 1950s or 1960s movie titled "Robot" as being in 3d which is why I thought the original poster was talking about that particular title.

I didn't realize there was a different movie titled "I am Robot" which was filmed only in 2d and" converted to 3d" for blu-ray release.

or is it the same movie with a different title in a foreign country?

It's a conversion of I, Robot with Will Smith from 2004. There is no "I am Robot."

Okay, this is a very nice super-limited item for Comic Con attendees.

Will the 3D BD version of I Robot be available commercially in standard packaging? I would certainly think so considering the investment that Fox made to make the conversion. This is an excellent film and I hope the 2D to 2D conversion is eye-popping.

Yes, the 3d blu ray will be released October 23 commercially, they said that they will have 250 limited edition with Robot heads to commemorate the release starting Thursday (today) at the comic con. Can't wait!

me too I really hope the conversion tech they've invested in really works. Could be huge if it's received well with the I Robot as the first 3D conversion with their tech

Are you saying that an ALL-NEW 2D to 3D conversion method has been developed and I Robot is the first to utilize it? How intriguing! Is there a link that describes it?

All the reports I've read are pretty vague as far as process goes. Here's the best one I've found.

My Samsung ES8000 uses advanced algorithms as well, and I would argue has the best 2D-3D conversion available on a bluray player or tv on the market today. I might as well just buy the cheaper 2D version and use the tv's built in conversion if it's even close to the same technology/quality of what they are doing here

Now if they actually went back to certain scenes and added pop outs, and gave the film something besides the in-screen-depth-only experience you get from a predominately positive parallax 2D-3D on the fly conversion...I might be interested. If it's H.P. and the Deathly Hallows P.1 3D all over again and they hardly touched this one up at all...count me out

JVC's new 2D-3D conversion gets Fox approval
17 April 2012 Story Code : dq84

Will Smith sci-fi hit I Robot is to be converted to 3D for a new Blu-Ray release later this year under a new deal which could give a significant boost to closing the gap on 3D content available to view in the home, writes Adrian Pennington.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is to re-release I Robot and a series of its back catalogue movies to Blu-ray 3D using a new 2D-3D conversion technology devised by JVC which is claimed to cut existing conversion costs and time by two thirds.

JVC is to offer the conversion process as a service, initially based out of Video-Tech, a Japan based subsidiary of the company. It will also look to licence the technology to facility houses.

The technology itself has emerged from JVC's work in producing the first realtime 2D 3D conversion box IF-2D3D1 (pictured) in 2010. The company then attempted to make the product into a system for post production. The algorithms behind that initiative have been put to use on this new service.

"Current 2D 3D conversions can cost $50-70,000 per minute meaning feature films can cost $10-15m and take 600-700 people nine months or so to produce," said Susumu Sakakibara, Director Video-Tech and General Manager Business Development, JVC. "With this service a feature like I Robot can take three people three months to convert at a third of the price."

This is possible, he said, because the technology reduces the amount of manual rotoscoping from around 100-150 roto moves per frame to an average of nine. "We are already talking with other studios about this," he added.

Broadcasters too will find this of interest as a means to dramatically build up their 3D inventory. BSkyB for example has been strictly opposed to all-converted content on quality grounds but with the stamp of approval by a major studio this is potentially a game-changer.

"The advances in 3D conversion technology developed by JVC have exceeded our most optimistic expectations,” said Danny Kaye, EVP, Global Research and Technology Strategy, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. "We look forward to bringing movies like the already visually stunning I Robot to the home on Blu-ray 3D."

“One significant impediment to broad acceptance of 3D entertainment at home has been the limited amount of popular content,” said Kazuhiro Aigami, senior executive VP and executive officer, JVC KENWOOD Corporation. “This new process allows the development of a practical business model for the release of legacy motion picture titles in 3D for the home entertainment market.”

Futuresource is predicting some 8.8 million households with 3D-equipped HDTVs by the end of 2012 and over 18 million households by the end of 2013. The increased interest in the format will bring a greater demand for quality 3D movies in the marketplace.

Thanks for posting the article on the new JVC 2D to 3D conversion technology. Although FOX seems to like it, the bottom line will be what we the viewers think. I am curious if the reported 2D to 3D conversion of Roland Emerich's Independence Day (slated for release July 2013) is using this system for its conversion.

Wasn't the Alien Egg initially a limited edition Comic Con Exclusive, too?

A year from now we'll know that they actually made 25,000 sets and they'll be selling them on eBay for $20 shipped.
