Default rumble back for ps3??? maybe so

i just ran into this article on 1up.com

Immersion and Sony Kiss, Make Up, Partner
Good vibrations for Sony and Immersion prevail.
By Luke Smith, 03/01/2007

There are no more rabbit jokes to be made. Though, maybe a joke or two about Phil Harrison's easily misinterpreted comments about the last gen nature of rumble and force feedback are due. Immersion and Sony, who have been embroiled in a lengthy catfight over a once-existing lawsuit over Immersion's technology, announced that the two companies would "conclude their patent litigation" and enter a new business partnership to incorporate Immersion tech in PlayStaion products.
Dave Karakker, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications for Sony Computer Entertainment America told 1UP the following regarding the reunification of Sony and Immersion: "We are very pleased to have reached a cooperative agreement with Immersion regarding the use of its advanced vibration technology (haptics technology). We look forward to working closely with them as we explore new and innovative ways to utilize this technology in PlayStation products."

See Sony, those last gen features aren't so bad, after all.

Great!

Rumble isn't the end of the world, but for me, when it's gone it's subliminal. I hope it comes back ASAP.

This is good news. Also saw it over on Gamespot...

Although I don't really miss the rumble feature, it's one less thing for people to complain about or for MS to claim it as a 360 advantage.

Just read it on a Dutch news site, GREAT NEWS. Because this news came out of nowhere, I completely gave up on rumble.

Just in time for Kojima productions to incorporate the rumble feature into MGS4. I am a big MGS fan, the only games I play are MGS. So this is SWEEEEEET!

I'd pick up a replacement controller immediately. I'd love to see some improvements though, more than two main rumble frequencies, maybe even rumble and electromagnet force feedback on the analog sticks. Could be tricky with battery life and the small space it needs to fit in.

Gran Turismo 5 with stick force feedback, no shelling out £$£ for a wheel - brilliance.

I won't be too disappointed if it doesn't happen though.

The main reason they didn't include rumble was because it would screw up the motion sensors. So if you had rumble you couldn't use sixaxis and vice-versa so it's kind of a crap shoot.

That's not true, it's just want Sony wanted you to believe. Immersion and other 3rd party manufacturers have said you can have both. If Sony had included it and lost the lawsuit they would have had to recall millions of controllers or pay some royalty fee for every controller out there.

Hmm, someone fell for Sony spin. The Sixaxis is more than capable of doing rumble, Sony were (understandably) pissed at Immersion so they told them to f**k off, and made a weak excuse.

In my view, the controller doesn't have rumble because it would suck battery power big time. I don't really miss it and if I do on the PS2 games, I can just use the controller adaptor. Haven't tried it on any PS3 games though. Dunno if it would work.

That's what software rumble on/off options are for.

Here's the thing though regarding this truce between Sony and Immersion:

If they want rumble for the PS3 controller, how would they put the feature in?

-Release a new controller grade (a high-end one containing rumble + wireless bluetooth + motion control). Something like in the XBOX 360 where there is a low-end controller has a cord or is wired and the other one has wireless in it?

or

-Replace all current controllers for FREE (or at least for a LOW PRICE) with this newer controller to come out.

or

Just wait for a PS4. By then, Sony can integrate ALL of the said possible features (Rumble + wireless bluetooth + motion control) and perhaps more. Besides, waiting for 5 MORE YEARS may not be long for most people anyway. So enjoy your PS3 for the meantime (if you have one) and just wait for 5 more years for a PS4 model.

No, it will be like the original PS, they introduced rumble at a later date, but eventually it became the dominant controller so developers supported it in all their games. Sony will stop making the motion sensing only controllers, and replace them all with rumble and motion sensing controllers, so every new one bought will have rumble as well, and considering we are so early in the lifetime of the console, it should work out OK.

Oh yeah I forgot about that possibility as well.

Hey, this sorta reminds me of my old PS1 where my controllers DID NOT have analog sticks (no L3 and no R3 buttons).

Hehe

I wonder how many gamers realise the pressure sensitive buttons were kept on the SIXAXIS and dropped for the 360 pad?

The first thing I really missed when playing Metal Gear Solid for Gamecube after MGS2 on PS2 was the lack of pressure-sensitive gun trigger button, it was really fiddly holding another button to ease off and didn't have the same control-matches-the-action feel.

Glad it's there for MGS4 to use for potentially multiple action buttons. Hideo always surprises us with new actions!

I read this article to on 1up.com, but I still have my doubts. Yes, I'm 99.9% sure we'll he "Dual Shaxis", but there's still a chance Sony can use the rumble feature for other products such as force feedback wheels or something else...

A force feedback steering wheel will be huge when GT5 comes out. So I figure they have another year or 2 to work that out.
