Default PS3 and Audio Set-Up/Issues

Ok everyone, still new, but need HELP.

Current Set-Up

HDTV: Sony KDS-R60XBR2 60" SXRD 1080p XBR
Blu Ray: PS3
Receiver: Sony STRDE-985 (non-HDMI)
Surround: Bose Acoustimass 16

I am having some sound issues with my current set-up. I am running HDMI for video from PS3 to TV. I am running optical cable from PS3 to receiver for audio.

Whenever I set the PS3 audio to bitstream, I get numerous "blips" or "cut-outs" from my receiver sound, which is incredibly intolerable. Does anyone know why this is happening? The sound just goes silent for a second and then everything will be fine, then it will just happen every now and again.

Now when I set the PS3 audio to linear, the sound is fine and I don't get the same "blips" or silent pauses at all, but I don't think that I'm hearing my best audio option when set up like this. Is this true?

Also - if I want to watch a BluRay disc that has DTS, do I have to have the PS3 audio set to bitstream?

As you can all see, I need a ton of advising. Thanks

Your sound quality should be fine through the optical cable with the bitstream settings you described. Check the physical connections on your optical cable, to make sure it's seated properly in the PS3 and receiver. Also, double check the sampling rates you have set in the PS3 - I'm not familiar with your receiver but the sampling rates may be too high.

If neither of those work try a different optical cable. You may have a faulty one, and that's what I suspect is the problem.

Good luck.

The best sound quality can only be obtained through the HDMI cable. If you had an AV Receiver that supported HDMI, then you would want to hook up the HDMI from the PS3 to the receive, and then another HDMI from the receiver to the HDTV. This would give you the best sound. But an optical cord gives you the next best sound. It sounds like it is hooked up right, just make sure you check all the codecs in the PS3 set up menu to make sure they turn on.
If you want to listen to true HD sound, you will need to upgrade.

I have the same problem on one game which is Need for Speed Pro Street. I get no sound from the optical cable but I do if I use the HDMI cable. You will probably have no problems in the next year when game companies and SONY get their act together on making quality PS3 games. Right now 90% of PS3 games aren’t even worth buying.

That's not a valid statement at all. I use the digital optical cable with my PS3, and I've never had an audio problem at all, even with NFS: Pro Street.

There's a lot of great games on PS3 today, and a ton of amazing games are about to be unleashed on the system. Every system suffers from having crap games, and that problem rests squarely on the developers' shoulders.

Read up on details of hardware info released to game companies for the Xbox 360 and for the PS3. Sony failed to release critical details and other gaming websites do agree that they are just now getting their act together. As for game quality on the PS3 is laughable since it’s a fact they aren’t even hitting close to the PS3’s ability yet, but I do agree there are some games that have nice graphics. Grand Tourismo, Final Fantasy and other games alike will shed the light on what the PS3 can really do.
