Default Tech Questions Can you play hd h.264 burned to dvd

I own a hdtv tuner for my mac mini and I was hoping someone can give me an awnser to this question. Just like you can burn a VCD with Mpeg2 and play it back on a dvd player can you burn a hd quality tv show with h.264 (mpeg4) on a dvd and play it back on a bluray player. I currently own a BDP_S1 if that helps. Thanks and I am sure there are others interested in burning hd quality movies on to dvds and using them in their bluray players.

BTW I am trying to make a guide for others to use on this website. I will be trying different settings but having done this in the past with my dvd player with other codecs if someone has some experience I can probably save hours trying out different bitrates and audio codecs.

So far, while the BD specs support BD-9 which is a DVD burnt with BDMV (this was supposedly to make Warner happy), there is no way of authoring BD9 BDMVs just yet NOR would standalone players recognize it.

So the next step is would standalone recognize MP4 files?

AVCHD with mpeg2 or h.264 on DVD9 works on my PS3. I believe it should work on the S1 as well.

However, I don't know how you would create an AVCHD disc on a mac.

One thing you can try, is to take a clip and just burn it a dvd data disc and see if the S1 can see the file. If it can then you don't need to "author" the disk, just select the file and play. Now if you want menus, etc...you'll need to author the disc.
