WOW

thanks guys for all your help, I heard a few today, no Cerwin-vega's though but I think the velodyne's have fairly nice bass. I really like deep end Bass, so that kind of helped, and recommendations on a velodyne model #? I live in Canada so hearing the HSU ones would more than likely be a little hard for me.

Hmmm anyway guys, again thanks for all the input...

I have the velodyne dps10 and I chose that model because well I wanted to feel the bass. Out of all I auditioned this was by far the one I felt the most. I was able to only audition the polk, mtx, velodyne vpr, klipsch and a few others I can't remember. To me this model looked the nicest and had the overall impact I was looking for. For music however I probably wouldn't recommend it since the bass is very strong. The vpr12 model I heard had a more cleaner sounding bass but for home theater the dps was the right choice for me. I actually bought the vpr model tried it out for a day and returned it for the dps. The only draw back was that it was a pain in the ass to tune. Reason being the volume control is not your conventional knob style but rather a up and down button with blinky lights so it's kinda hard to tell where you are at as far as volume goes. I did have an annoying hum coming from it when mated with the onkyo 705 but a dayton isolator fixed that problem and even made my picture cleaner. Bottom line once tuned right and humming fixed I am now completely satisfied with this sub and definitly changed my home theater experience. Oh and FWIW I upgraded from the onkyo ht800 to a 705 and def tech speakers. However, I upgraded the sub first and with the old system it made a world of difference.

Paradigm and Definitive Technologies are great as well. to read some reviews go to www.soundandvisionmag.com, they have a review section you can read.
+1

Don't buy into the "matching sub" sales pitch. Some companies like Velodyne and HSU specialize in subs and do it much better than many speaker companies. Velodyne's digital servo series subs help sub placement by measuring room accoustics and correcting sub output. If you can afford it, I would say seriously check out Velodyne.

If M&K were still around, I would recommend them without hesitation. M&K developed the first subs, and they are simply amazing.

if you feel the sound more than hearing the sound then you have a good subwoofer

seriously, though, the subwoofers from Definitive Technology are worth a look.

If you could swing a Velodyne sub in your budget, then by all means give it a try. They make some of the best subwoofers on the market and typically cost thousands more. If you can't swing that then try Paradigm. They make some good subs that would fit within your budget.

Can you tell me a bit about the dayton isolator, eg model number, where you got it from? I have a similar set-up with a Velodyne and Onk 705 and the hum is irritating.

Thanks!

The best thing to do is get an SPL meter......

Timber matching is not necessary with subs, as the sub's job is to focus on the low frequency stuff only.... it's important to get good placement, and also the correct sized sub for your setup, as well as sealed, ported, etc.... but the sub Does not need to be the same brand, or model-line as the rest of your speakers, and the only ones that really must be timber matched are the fronts and center.

Also it seems like a lot of people think bigger is better, and I'm willing to guess that if properly tested, the majority of people have their subs WAY TOO LOUD, and it may be a personal preference thing I guess, but proper adjustments and placements, and even some natural bass traps are FREE 'tweaks' you can do to make your system sound better, but more often than not people feel the need to throw more money into their system only to get an expensive system that sounds good, but isn't setup to it's optimal performance capabilities.

whats your room dimensions?

with that budget you'd definitely get the bang for your buck with two of my favorite subwoofer vendors. both have great customer service, and amazing speakers to boot most retail store brands out there...

with SVS they have two formats so to speak, the box versions and the cylinders.

both amazingly efficient,

HSU also is a reputable company that produces great subs as well. Some can perform with Turbos, which extend the range of the subwoofers capacity. With a little research, you can find the appropriate subwooofer for your room dimensions...below is a comparison chart you can use to find which sub is right for you...

Velodyne makes excellent subwoofers. I can recommend HSU Research. They make the best subs for the price. I own two 15" subs from them and create earthquakes in Southern California.

Also subwoofer placement is extremely important. I created a thread on how to calibrate your audio system. It has a section on subwoofer placemnt and the interaction between subs and main speakers.

For a $600 budget there are many brands that are good, I recommend two models from SVS, the PB12-NSD (box) or the 20-39 PCi (cylinder). If you end up not liking them, they have a 45 day money back guarantee. I have been very happy with the 20-39 PC-Plus for many years now.

Here's some questions:

How about two or more subwoofers? Where do you place duals and beyond?

Managing the bass under 80-110Hz versus LFE-only? The latter means you only get what the encoding put in the LFE channel. The former means the bass in the entire decoding (as well as for stereo, etc.) gets passed.

Line level v. bi-amp input?

one very good performing subwoofer can be a world of difference compared to two 'mediocre' subs.

i dont understand the managing bass question. your crossover will filter out anything you have determined it to filter (most default to 80hz), and send it to the sub. this plus the LFE is the reason why you have one.

line level is my choice. simple and works.

Yep - Paradigm makes great subs - got 3 of them.

You also might want to check out Craigslist to get a good deal on a used sub. A quality used sub will sound just a good as it did when it was new.
