I went to COX cable
![]() ![]() and then go on to ask if they have the new 8500 dvr and again nobody knows anything. Which lead me to ask when will the PS3 have dvr capabilities and how will it be connect to my already existing crappy cable line? If this is coming out out soon I just might can all the dvr and get another PS3!!!! |

I'm not sure how that can work without some kind of add-on device. The PS3 has no cable card slots or video inputs.

America wont get it. Europe and Australasia will. Not sure about Japan. The reason is in europe and over here in Australia we have DVB were most people have free to air and the service is standardised (meaning you only need a simple decoder to decode).
We also have cable providers but they require a special decoder box. As far as i know about America, you guys have cable providers as standard meaning each one requires is decoder which would be impossible for sony to do. |

If only all EPG's were that quick, responsive and attractive. My HD cable box UI doesn't even run in high def!
PlayTV may not be suitable as your primary DVR because I can't imagine it'll record while you're doing anything else with the PS3. I can see some people buying a second PS3 just to use it as a responsive HD DVR leaving the other for gaming and Blu-ray playback but ideally there would be a new alternative PS3 model with PlayTV built in. More on PlayTV in this thread. Last edited by Shin-Ra; 02-13-2008 at 05:46 AM. |

I'm waiting to see how Hauppage's new DVR will be. I hate the idea of paying monthly for recording on a drive.
http://www.connected-home-news.com/content/view/655/47/ More details surface on Hauppauge’s new HD PVR February 11, 2008 – Some new details have surfaced on the high-definition personal video recorder (PVR) being developed by US firm Hauppauge, courtesy of the Snapstream blog. The Hauppauge HD PVR has a component video input connection and can accept up to 1080p resolution streams. It will be able to encode to H.264 transport streams at up to 25 Mbps, and will have a video out connector, although this is not expected to be used due to the Ambarella driver used. The unit is expected to retail for around $250 and ship before the end of the first quarter of this year. |

In the US, don't know about else were, but the Tivo Series 3 HD DVR is a monster machine... 32 hours HD (300 SD Hours) + avail add on drive for 65 hours HD (600 SD Hours). The only THX certified sound system. Accepts cable cards so you can record 2 shows of premium HD service without cable box, plus display on front of machine tells you whats recording, not just a record light. Can stream to your pc or other TV's, download movies from Amazon and other sites, stream your MP3 and pictures from your PC to the machine, and you can tell it to record something from your PC or laptop from anywhere in the world, great for last minute recording option. Tivo kicks butt over the comcast DVR's here, those suck and have very little features. The Tivo is a price beast though, at $599 (on sale for $429). plus $12.95/monthly fee for the Tivo service (which is amazing!). There is a Series 2 HD for only $299. with 20 hours HD space and can run the add on hard drive. Once you pay for it, the monthly fee is only 3 bucks more than the $10 monthly fee our comcast charges for thier HD DVR. The ease of use and simplicity is just unmatched.
Really for the true HD fan... but, one flaw it only supports 480p, 720p & 1080i - no 1080p yet. http://www.tivo.com/whatistivo/Series3/s3features.html Last edited by dv8pdx; 02-13-2008 at 10:33 AM. |

yes, there is a $12.95 monthly fee for Tivo... but its so worth it, so many features, plus it learns what you like to watch and records similar items... like if you watch Law and Order, it can record L&O SVU, then watch it, if you dont like it... you tell it you didn't like it and it wont record it anymore... or like Battlestar Galactica, if you have that as a season pass, when the mini movie Razor came out, it would automatically record it for you... plus you can download tons of movies and tv shows, many that aren't on OnDemand... Plus record programing from anywhere in the world to your machine. That I think is pretty cool. So 13 bucks is worth it.

The problem that PS3 will have if/when they implement DVR capability is disk space. None of the 3 disk size options are big enough to compete with other DVR's. We can upgrade disk of course, so maybe it will still happen.
IMO if the PS3 is to get DVR, they should make an over the air USB tuner for it. If they did that, I'd drop DirecTV in a heartbeat. 0 dollars a month for HD content + DVR is much better than 105 bucks a month. Making the PS3 an OTA DVR would sell alot of units, IMO. |
