What in your mind are some "perfect" movies? Let perfect mean every scene works; plus script, to cast to shots, nothing is wasted, nothing is extra; plus general consensus is positive and it can be watched again and again.
What inspired me to make this thread was watching Chinatown on blu last night, which I would consider one of the few flawless films in existence. There is literally nothing that can be done to improve that film IMO. Casablanca and The Sting are two others off the top of my head that I cannot imagine being any better than they are. |

I'd say.....
Terminator Terminator 2:Judgement Day Hot Fuzz Shaun of the Dead Dawn of the Dead '78 Night of the Living Dead BOTH '68 & '90 Monster Squad Die Hard Die Hard:With a Vengence Live Free or Die Hard (Unrated Version) Star Wars:A New Hope (ORIGINAL Version) Star Wars:Empire Strikes Back (ORIGINAL Version) And the Back to the Future Trilogy is on the verge of perfection as a whole as far as story, but the recasting of Jennifer and George McFly's recasting even if he played as a cameo-type role in Parts II & III,costs it. There are a few others I don't see fault in,but those came out off the top of my head. Even tho I probably have unpopular choices like The 3rd & 4th Die Hard and maybe NOTLD'90. |

Early on in my BD career I decided (on something of a whim, actually) to collect the AFI Top 100 and I have to say quite a few of them would make any 'perfect film' list I'd put together.
Are there perfect films that aren't on the list. Of course. For one thing, it's limited to films that are primarily American and it was last updated, I believe, in the late 90s. That means Downfall and The Lives of Others would have two strikes against them where one would be perfectly sufficient. Are all 100 entries perfect? I don't know, I still haven't seen them all but those I've seen are either perfect or awfully damn close. Even those few I don't particularly care for (The French Connection or Some Like It Hot, for instance) aren't flawed in any way - they just don't do it for me. Whatever one might think of reviewers or scholars or experts oh my it's a very good resource and I'm very glad I started down that particular path. It's been a lot of fun. I Saw the Devil Pulp Fiction I consider a movie perfect if every scene belongs in the movie, exactly where it is, and at the end I don't wish they'd done things differently (an ending that feels forced, for example). It needs to feel like it accomplished everything it set out to do, especially creating characters that you actually care about, even if you only care because you want horrible things to happen to them. |

It's hard to find those type of movies. There will always be moments that make you go
![]() One movie that always just work well for me, a movie that just flow by without noticing the time and just being immerse into the story is Equinox Flower by Yasujiro Ozu. I am sure a lot of people would find it boring to death and would disagre with me but for some reason it's a movie that for me just is perfect. I can watch it over and over again and just always be amaze by how simple the story is and just how well it work's. |
