If it happens with HD DVD, you'll know there are subsidies.

No it is near because Blu-ray sales in February beat HD-DVD sales 2:1. And with the upcoming release schedule this number will continue to get uglier as the year progresses for HDUD.

The reality of the situation will be seen when the PS3 debuts in Europe. No one will be able to claim victory, but after seeing its effect in the US, it should be substantial, to say the least. The Departed BR outsold HD-DVD, negating a claim by an executive at a company supporting HD-DVD that the reason for the 2:1 advantage was the number of different titles for BR. He claimed that on a title-to-title basis, the numbers were the same. The Departed showed a different story. High-def Digest has that story.
