Default DVD end?

Do you think that regular DVDs will eventually be done with the way vhs tapes were? I remember it took around 8 to 10 years to see their end on store shelfs.

No DVD isn't going anywhere. In 300 years when we have cities on Mars they will be using DVDs.

I believe you have mis-information, Vhs lasted well into 20 years
Quote:
The Video Home System,[1] better known by its abbreviation VHS, is[2] a recording and playing standard developed by Victor Company of Japan, Limited (JVC) and launched in Europe and Asia in September 1975, and the United States in June 1976, with The Young Teacher being the first movie to be released and A History of Violence, released on home video in 2006, being the last in the North American market.[3] By the 1990s, VHS became a standard format for consumer recording and viewing, after competing in a fierce format war with Sony Corporation's Betamax and, to a much lesser extent, Philips' Video 2000, MCA's Laserdisc and RCA's Capacitance Electronic Disc.
more

Unlike DVD, VHS was primarily intended for the rental market and its sell through prices were unacceptable(as much as 100.00). It wasnt until the early 90's when the sell through prices made them attractive for retail purchases. DVD was introduced at the same pricing blu-ray was, 29.99-39.99 MSRP

On December 23, 2008, the last major supplier of VHS tapes, Distribution Video Audio Inc. of Palm Harbor, Florida, shipped its final truckload. [5]

I'd be more concerned with Blu Ray ending than SD DVD at this point, the latter not going anywhere for a long time to come considering household owners of players.

Well if BD did suffer like other formats have, like all bloggers seem it will...does that mean prices will finally fall!? lol

I have to agree. So far it looks like Blu-ray is for the enthusiasts... just like laserdisc was.

A lot of people are happy with the DVD format. It's simple to use, and it's cheap. Even my mom and dad got a DVD player.

I think its just the fact that going from VHS to DVD was a drastic jump, where as DVD to Blu does not seem that drastic to those who dont know anything about it.

But its drastic on my wallet

What I should do is sell all my dvds that I really dont need anymore, and take that money and get some BD

I think DvD and Blu-ray will both be around for a while.

Since they deliver what their respective fans want so well, they will be around a lot longer then their predecessors.

i.e.:

DvD was sooooooo much better than VHS and a wonderful way to watch movies. People who just want to watch a flick will be satisfied for a long time.

Blu-ray is just a waaaay better idea then Laserdisc and is just physically more capable of lasting longer. For the people who care, Blu-ray willl be around alot longer than Laserdisc was for the people who cared back then.

Ultimately, the world will be bathed and baptized in a sea of Blu, but that will not be for some time.

I think DVD will be around for years & years ( unfortunately ), cause DVD's work in BD players unlike VHS & DVD. We all know this though.
