Just wanna see what people think on this loaded question.
Did Paramount light a fire under the BDA that resulted in them heavily courting WB? or Did WB truly feel that two formats would never work from the beginning and was simply waiting for the right time to end their neutrality (1/4). Please note: if you think they would have gone blu, do you think they would have gone blu so quickly. Last edited by stockstar1138; 02-14-2008 at 12:16 AM. |

I voted yes because I feel that if Para hadn't gone red, Blu would score even higher during Transformers week. So therefore, WB and Para would go Blu and ended this war even sooner due to the numbers.
Para went red only delay the inevitable. The outcome remain the same. |

I think the Paramount fiasco was a perfect example of what NOT to do. I don't believe there was any direct correlation between Warner going blu exclusive and Paramount dropping Blu-ray.
Warner isn't stupid and on top of that, made the HD page tuning point in history that solidified the direction of format preference. The sales numbers were already there, it just gave a face to the HD format winner. |

I think you're reading too much into things with this one...
the BDA is out to win the war and Warner's decision would have been even easier if Paramount was still supporting both formats, this would have led Paramount directly to Blu since that is where all the money would be... Universal must have some sort of obligation to have held on for this long...and up until recently when the rumored red suitcases had to end up somewhere ![]() |

If we hadn't lost Paramount, I feel this war would be already officially over. Both Warner and Paramount probably would've gone Blu Exclusive at CES 2008 leaving absolutely no choice for Uni and Toshiba.
The sales of transformers and shrek on Blu from Paramount and Harry Potter from WB would've made for some even more impressive numbers than what we saw. |

I voted no, but it's more of an inevitable yes. Warner would not have gone Blu so soon without Paramount making a big mistake and confusing things in the format war further. The consumer was indeed choosing Blu, but Paramount made the first move as far as studios publicly changing stance.

Warner went blu because sales dipped for the first time since DVD came out, and it was decided that the cause was the format war.

Heck,
I don't know... I certainly didn't expect WB to go Blu at the very start of Jan just before CES. It was a kick in the teeth to lots of people that finally could afford to buy into HD Media and bought one of the HD DUD players for the family x-mass tree. You know.. those $99 players cut into budgets. Still,... That way people were able to return them and if they had any sense they did return them even if they cut off the UPC. I certainly can't imagine how things would have been different without the paramount mistake. It happened and was dramatic and I can't guess how things would have gone down otherwise. -Brian |
