Default NovaStrike – Trophy Update Released

http://tikigames.net/

NOVASTRIKE is a top-down arcade shooter in which the player takes control of a prototype advanced Scythe fighter and combats invading aliens over various planetary surfaces. The player fights both air and ground opponents ranging from enemy fighters to capital ships and ultimately an end-Boss. As the player progresses the Scythe unlocks its full potential through upgrading its weapon systems and overall capabilities.

Features include:
  1. Seven expansive challenging stages driven by objective-based goals
  2. Free-roaming flight: there aren't any rails here allowing flight in any direction
  3. Progressive weapon acquisition and upgrade system: as the player successfully collects weapon drops from enemy ships the weapons themselves become available to the Scythe - there are nine base weapon systems, each with three subsequent upgrade levels
  4. Air and ground targets: two separate weapon systems allow the player to combat both air and ground opponents
  5. Multi-sectioned enemies where individual components can be destroyed; for example, Carriers have hangars that launch fighters - these hangars can be destroyed independently of destroying the Carrier preventing the Carrier from launching additional fighters
  6. Multitude of enemies: the player will combat enemy fighters, bombers, kamikazes, aces, carriers, and destroyers, all leading to an end-Boss fight
  7. You're not alone: friendly fighters, bombers, and destroyers will aid you in your efforts to vanquish the Draelus invasion
  8. DualShock 3 support
  9. Uses Tiki Games own graphics engine technology
  10. Continuing support: Tiki Games will be developing additional content for NOVASTRIKE
NOVASTRIKE is targeting a second-quarter 2008 release on the PLAYSTATION®3 via the PLAYSTATION ® Network.

Scrollers are an art form, so I hope this one is done right. The limited media available doesn't really say one way or the other. But if it's good, I can easily see this replacing PixelJunk Monsters are my new fave PSN game.

Debut Trailer HD

Looks better than the first screenshot, the HUD and machine-gun esque sound effect could do with some improvement though.

The PSN Store finally updated here in the US this morning. I picked up Novastrike, and it's pretty decent for a top-down shooter.

Pros:
+ Nice graphics and solid framerate
+ Weapon powerups are persistent from level to level, so you get stronger over time
+ Solid tutorial that shows you everything you need to know in a very hands-on way
+ Nice spectrum of enemies, and you occasionally get allies who help you out in combat as well.
+ Shielding system is relatively forgiving for what comes perilously close to a Bullet Hell shooter at times.

Cons:
- Basic attacks are very weak and a little hard to aim since they're slow and have extremely limited range.
- Some special attacks are ammo-limited for some ridiculous reason, which is weird since their rate of fire is so slow that making them infinite ammo wouldn't have broken anything.
- Enemies take a great deal of punishment to kill, even basic peon-types.
- Difficulty curve on "normal" (Soldier) difficulty is a bit over the top for a typical top-down shooter.
- Control scheme isn't customizable, and it's rather awkward. R2 fires primary weaponry, L2 fires secondary weaponry, L1/R1 cycle through their respective weapons. Primary and most secondary weapons fire only forward in the direction you are flying, making it hard to aim at some targets. You do eventually get access to a supplemental turret attack controlled off the right analog stick, which helps somewhat, but it's relatively low powered so still aiming your main weapons is still necessary.

Honestly? Not for most. It's decent, but only just, so unless you're a die-hard shmup (shoot-em-up) fan like me, there's probably more frustration than fun here for the average player.

OKay. Maybe I will look for an old PS2 collections game with a top down shooter. Got the 25% off used PS2 games email today.

Patch brings new/tweaked difficulty levels, in game music, trphy support, and MORE!

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/...hies-and-more/

My natural sucktitude made me believe I just sucked as usual. Apparently more people had a big problem with the difficulty as well. So they reworked some of the existing difficulties, and added some new ones.

Not only that, they are adding support for the new trophy system, and in game music player. A title like Novastirke came and went without much commotion, so I honestly didnt expect them to pay this type of attention to it. Nice to see a small game going back and getting some of these feautres and support.
