It seems like we’ve heard news of a Child’s Play sequel and reboot for years now, but it appears that a sequel is finally happening. According to Moviehole, Universal Home Entertainment is moving forward with Curse of Chucky.
The film will be written and directed by Don Mancini and begins shooting this September in Winnipeg. This will be a direct-to-video sequel that is said to focus more on the scares than humor and here is the plot synopsis: “Chucky arrives to wreck havoc within a family that’s regrouped for a funeral. In the wake of her mother’s passing, a young woman – in a wheelchair since birth – is forced to put up with her sister, brother-in-law, niece and their nanny as they say their goodbyes to mother. When people start turning up dead, the fearless Nica discovers the culprit might be a “strange doll” she was sent a couple of days earlier.” Fans won’t have to worry about who’s voicing Chucky, because Brad Dourif is already on board. However, this movie is said to pass over the recent sequels and will be more of a follow up to Child’s Play 3, so we won’t see any of the newer characters including Jennifer Tilly. Here are more spoiler-filled character and plot details via Moviehole: “Main characters in the film include heroine Nica; Barb, Nica’s older sister, a manipulative, controlling cow that nags her handsome husband Ian and 5-year-old daughter Alice; and Jill, the “smokin’ hot” nanny that’s sleeping with Ian. There’s also fun supporting characters like a meddling priest, who will come face-to-cross with Chucky, and of course, the deceased woman, mother Sarah. But, as I said, it’s Chucky who takes king credit – he’s who we want to see, and by golly, sounds like he’s back to his murderous ways. As I said, this is a return to ‘nasty’ Chucky – the scary little son-of-a-***** that leaves nobody standing around to get their shits and giggles as two plastic dolls play hide the plastic cabana via silhouette… There’s a big-ass knife, and by golly, Chucky’s gonna use it – and in the most graphic of ways. There’s some very disturbing slaughter scenes planned for the flick.” Source: Moviehole |

(And going for just a flat marketing driven "Watch this week's jerks get what's comin' to 'em! ![]() Originally, Child's Play 3 tried to plant a studio-written #4 by having the characters talk about "that abandoned asylum down the road..." Then new producers bought it out for "Bride of", and had to wipe all references to the previous franchise (including altering Chucky's design), but "Son of" didn't go through in pre-production and had to legally change its title to "Seed of" when it changed hands AGAIN. Like the Terminator sequels, it's sort of like hot-potato: Whoever's holding it when the green-light goes on, has to wipe the franchise slate clean. |

Hell yes!
![]() I'll gladly take a sequel over a remake. So supposedly the sequel will wipe out Bride (which I only saw once in the theater and hated, so I need to watch it again to be fair) and Seed, which I loved. Either way, count me in to see it. Brad Dourif doing the voice of Chucky again is a godsend. Without him it just wouldn't be the same. |

Bride and Seed are great. They're not Child's Play movies, remember that, and sit back and laugh.
Definitely looking forward to this though. I'm glad it's not a reboot. Not ready for a new Chucky yet... |

Such quick near-title rescribblings happen all the time to satisfy the Legal department, but Seed didn't have to take their duties of justifying the title quite so....earnestly. ![]() |

As long as Brad Dourif remains the voice and the murder set pieces are good, I'm in, comedy or not. I do hope it has at least some humor, because I really don't think you can make a Chucky movie without some comedy in it--I mean, he's two feet high, for goodness sake--get a foootballer in to give give him a good punt in the head, and bingo, plenty of time to get the hell out of dodge.

i think the "remake" vs. "sequel" debate w/ these kinds of movies is really just splitting hairs... after 7 Nightmare On Elm St. movies, what qualifies the most recent as a remake and not just another story in the Freddy Krueger canon. or Friday the 13th, for that matter. or Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc...
some movies (i.e. "Halloween") do try to go back to the genesis of the character & offer more background, for good or ill, and then essentially re-tell the same story. but for something like "Child's Play," i'd personally much rather see Chucky terrorizing an all-new set of characters than simply tormenting another young boy who just loves his new birthday present. been there, done that... my point is, after a certain number of sequels where the storyline is essentially the same, don't bother rehashing old ideas as a "remake," just call it what it is -- another unoriginal, cash-grabbing sequel |
