Default Audio Help

I need help with the audio quality on my PS3/HDTV/receiver. Here is my hook-up: My PS3 is connected to my LCD HDTV via HDMI, my HDTV is connected to my receiver via optical cable. The last 3 movies (Superman Returns, Crank, The Descent) have had horrible sound (Picture quality has been excellent). Are the movies that are the problem with the audio or is it my PS3/receiver setting? With my receiver on, the surround sounds great (explosions, music), but the spoken words/dialect sounds muffled. With just my tv on, I have to turn the volume very high to hear the movie. Previous movies have sounded awsome with the same hook-up. Any help with the setting/hook-up would be appreciated.

You should have the Fiber optic running from the PS3 to your receiver not from the TV to the receiver.

Combine the posts from DavePS3 & shamus :

The audio needs to go directly to the receiver and if you're using
a Toslink/optical cable you need to have the output on the PS3
set to bitstream. The optical cable can't handle the bandwidth
required for the full PCM.

I had the same problem when I hooked up my PS3;
I ran the PS3 via HDMI into my video processor, but since my
receiver does'nt have HDMI I ran the audio from the processor via optical.
The result was that only a few channels of sound came through at a time
and everyone's voice sounded like they were in a cave.

The Fix: bitstream via optical or PCM via HDMI or analog directly to the receiver.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for the info guys, I will try that tomorrow. I just want to make sure the sound is perfect so that I can enjoy Casino Royal as soon as I get it.

Sorry, I couldn't wait. I just re-connected my cables and... wow!!!!! Just let me say that my neighbors were pissed when I turned up my audio system.

Thanks guys.
