Posts: 7 805 and 605 WILL NOT UPSCALE TO 1080P

(converting 480p to 480p is not converting anything at all.)

Hello, The 805 has very similar video scaling as the 605 if not exactly the same. The 875 will convert any signal upto 1080P. Just thought i would mention this as it was the main reason I myself bought the 875 over the 805. As the 805 and its FAROUJIDA DCDi conversion chip will not do 1080P conversions although it will upscale 480i/p to 720P. Also downfall is if you are feeding the unit 1080i via RGB (component video) and output HDMI , it will be sent out at 720P. The 875 and its REON HQV chip will upscale any input/output video source upto 1080P. (EX. S-video,or RGB (in) to HDMI (out) is user selectable (AUTO,480I/P,720P,1080I/P) to match the TV. Auto will automatically select the highest resolution the TV can handle regardless of the input signal. The difference between the DCDi and the HQV is like night and day with the picture quality from SDTV to HDTV being noticeably better with the HQV chip. I first noticed it when I input my HDTV cable (Rogers HD8300 box) via RGB @1080i and let the Receiver scale it to 1080P with a much better quality of picture incl. far less mosquito type noise and the SD channels aren't true 1080P but the improvement is very relevant. I have also since turned off the scaling on my PS3 for regular DVDS which allows the HQV chip in the 875 to send it out @1080P with a better overall PQ then the PS3 did. I hope this information serves as useful to anyone interested in the Onkyo line of A/V receivers. Also I DID NOT write this to basically downtalk anyone but only so that interested buyers are more informed and dont buy an 805 expecting 1080P upscaling as the unit just cant do it. If anything I wrote is misunderstood or a reader would like to know more please feel free to ask as I own the 875 and I am EXTREMELY PLEASED with the unit. The sound quality alone VS. my old YAMAHA is like I am hearing a song again for the first time and it sounds very real and far more detailed and natural. Hope this has helped someone out there.

HEY BUD, SINCE U HAVE THE 875 CAN U HELP ME OUT SINCE NO ONE ELSE SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO. U SEE I HAVE NO SOUND COMING OUT OF MY TV AT ALL. I HAVE THE ONKYO 875 CONNECTED TO A SONY 40XBR2 SILVER VIA HDMI. I HAVE A PS3 CONNECTED TO IT VIA HDMI AND U CAN HEAR IT FINE WHEN I HAVE THE PS3 ON BUT WHEN I SWITCH TO NORMAL TV I CANNOT GET SOUND. I HAVE THE MONITOR SET TO YES FOR HDMI OUTPUT AND CHOSE INT1 FOR THE PS3 OUTPUT AS WELL. STILL NO SOUND FROM THE REGULAR TV. JUST WITH PS3 ONLY AND RADIO. DO U KNOW WHY BY ANY CHANCE?

ALSO U SAID PREVIOUSLY U TURNED OFF THE DVD UPSCALER ON THE PS3 TO LET THE 875 DO THE SCALING FOR AND LET IT UPCONVERT TO 1080P, BUT DID U ALSO TURN OFF THE PS1/PS2 UPSCALER AS WELL? AND DID U TURN OF THE SMOOTH SELECTOR AS WELL? IF THAT IS TURNED OFF, WILL THE PS1/PS2 GAMES BE UPSCALED TO 1080P AS WELL? PLEASE HELP, THANKS

Default Klispch Kw 10 Subwoofer Issues

I Have The Klipsh Kw 10 Subwoofer But There Are Switches And Knobs In The Back I Don't Understand Or Know How To Use Them To My Advantage. Should I Leave The Phase At Zero Or Switch It To 180? Should I Move The Mhz Knob From 40 To 120? Should I Keep The Subwoofer On Half Way Level Or 2? I Have It Connected With An Rca Y Digital Cable From The Subwoofer To The Onkyo 875. Thanks

the phase switch changes the cone to either push out or pull in with a positive signal... If your speakers are wired red to red, black to black, phase should be 0..... The crossover freq is set to 80 for THX but again it depends on your speakers, placement and room... set the gain to unity and let the amp control the output
hope this helps

Talking

Thanks, i did what u said but there is still a knob there is still a knob called, "Lowpass Filter" that goes from 40hz to 120 hz. What setting should i put that at? The room is 20 long by 12 wide. I have the tv facing the opposite way of the sofa ofcourse, the short way (12 wide). The speakers are klipsch quintet 2 sinergy series.

Also, the 875 onkyo says that it can also OUTPUT sound through the hdmi cable. I have the new 1.3 category two. When i called the company i bought it from, they told me i had to connect an optical cable or coaxial from the tv out to the receiver in but that defeats the purpose of part of the hdmi and cables. PLus the Manual does say if i set the hdmi OUTPUT to on, that it will somehow out put it. I can see the tv picture on every channel (no cable box, just straight wall connect and yes i get free hd channels this way as the xbr 2 does have a built in qam) but i cannot hear anything coming out of the hdmi. The guy said it's because hdmi does not carry the signal from the tv through the hdmi to the reciever, the way the ps3 is doing due to the ps3 hdmi out to in receiver. Then why would the book say it can do it? I have looked on websites and forums and can find nothing on it or the onkyo site. CAN ANYONE HELP THE VIRGIN OUT HERE? lol God bless and thanks

CAn u believe i got this new 875 this week and now the right surround channel does not work. I switched up the wiring and speakers and all speakers and channels all work except for that one right surround. Yesterday when i connected it i heard it working then all of a sudden, now it doesn't work. I'm worndering if maybe that channel just blew out due to extreme heat. Any ideas?

Default No sub output via HDMI?

Hey everyone-

Finally unpacked the new 605 and got some questions maybe you all can answer...

I have my ps3 connected via HDMI and everything's great, but when playing music back, it doesn't output to my subwoofer. When I change the input to optical digital, it then works fine. I do have the SW setting set to "Yes", but there's nothing even when I play Snoop Dogg.

Can somebody assist?

Thanks

not same receiver, but similar observation this weekend:

i had to set my front speakers to "SMALL" and adjust crossover accordingly and suddenly my sub came alive.

i would think direct stream will assume all speakers are full range (the "LARGE") setting and therefore make no attempt to process the audio. But set them all to small and I bet even under "DIRECT", it will use the sub.

BTW -- how do you like the Onkyo?

does your bluray player have to have MASTER DTS HD OR DOBLY HD on it in order to enjoy those different sound modes thru this reciever. the guy at CC told me no i just wanted a second opinion. Case i have a BDP 1200. Im hoping once i buy the receiver i dont have to buy another player.

There is no such thing as "large" or "small" settings. But I can change them to do "full range" or something similar to that. FR cuts off any sound altoghether to the sub.

I'm going to with hold judgement until I can properly set this thing up, and then I'll reach my conclusion.

Does anyone know how to turn off the multichannel function? I pressed it to see what it could do, now I can't seem to get it off that setting.

I'm not sure about the sub setting as I have yet to buy a sub... but I just bought the 605 and I LOVE it... the sound is clean and it's easy to use.

Is it normal for the TX-SR605S to be very warm at the top right when in standby mode? Is it still draining much of my electricity while in standby? Is there a way to switch standby off and just turn it off without unplugging?

Every time I feel I am convinced to buy the receiver, I read a comment like this. You are telling me the receiver feels warm on top even when switched off?

Yes it is warm even when on standby, as warm as when my Old Sony receiver is left on. Another negative about the onkyo is it creates a popping sound through the speakers when a disc starts playing or when it's stopped. Doesn't happen with my Sony. Minor issues, overall I am happy with the Onkyo.
