Default If the shoe was on the other foot, would you buy an HD DVD player?

With the immediate rise of scorched earth "downloads are the future anyway" rhetoric from dejected red-only folks, I'm curious to see what you guys who have been Blu only from the beginning would feel like if Toshiba had somehow been able to pull it off. So, be honest, no answer is a wrong answer, but if it had been the BDA doing the press conference last night, would you guys be looking at HD DVD players today?

If Toshiba had been able to pull it off, it would have been clear all along. And most of us would already own an HD DVD player.

There are zealots on the Blu side too. But, mostly "it's about the movies, stupid". Blu-ray offered studios, and the capacity and bandwidth for zero compromise approach. But, HD DVD would have been better than low bit-rate downloads, and the HDM fans would have been forced to rally.

Already have a HD DVD player...

Like I have always maintained, it's all about the content and HD DVD has got some pretty good stuff.

If they won, yes, I would have bought a player.

Thankfully it didn't come to that.

In the anger of the Paramount defection months ago, it would have been "No way on God's green earth!" If the inferior technology won, as a BD owner, I would have given up on HDM and moved on to other things.

But I would not have picked a side if it didn't look so good for BD. For me, that 2:1 sales lead was enough indicator of what was to come. So in August of 2007 I bit. But who could have foreseen that STUPID Paramount defection to camp red only a month later? In the end, it only gave HD DVD 6 months more to live.

Pre BDP ownership, I briefly discussed it with a co-worker who already adopted HD DVD. I was aghast! This very intelligent Engineer, very pleasant black guy explained to me that HD DVD was going to win, in spite of the sales trend. "Why?" "Because Microsoft is backing HD DVD."

This really set back my adoption date as to rethink the entire concept. I know that MS wins by right or by might, they win and are damn good at winning. I now pondered what would happen in the face of Microsoft supporting the lesser of the two formats? Did they have the strength and resolve to undo the strong market forces? Thankfully, no.

Had I not adopted either format and HD DVD won, I probably would begrudgedly go with HD DVD for want of HD movie quality, but not out of love for the HD technology. As I do with blu-ray.

Oh, and that Engineer who adopted HD DVD, he left the company months ago. How poetic.

In the bizarro world if the BDA declared defeat and the ONLY HDM left would be HD DUD... I would be UBER PISSED but YES, I would buy a HD DUD loser POS player and a DUNCE hat to boot

Glad I don't have to

I would have, because I like watching movies in hi-def. But I would bemoan the fact that an inferior format won. I'd also be upset that no Fox movies would probably release on HD DVD, thanks to their disdain for HDi.

Ironically in my situation I'd probably find it easier to move over to HD-DVD if Blu-ray failed than what most of the guys on the other side will have going this way instead. Like a large amount of people on here my main Blu-ray player is a PS 3 so if blu-ray as a movie format failed then at least I've not got a upscaling dead duck in my living room. I could still use it for games which I do anyway and as a media centre, again as I do..thats got to be an easier pill to swallow.

I'd buy fully into HD-DVD if it was the only format but I do prefer my Blu-rays so am happier that this time round the winning format happens also to be the most future proof and more advanced format as well..

If the shoe was on the other foot, than all signs would have pointed to HD-DVD being the winner and I would have purchased that instead. Of course, if the shoe was truly on the other foot, than HD-DVD would have been a superior product in the first place.

Now, had HD-DVD pulled out the win and made Blu Ray throw in the towel, yes...I would convert.

I'm not a rabid fanboy of a product or product line, nor am I some corporate obsessed acolyte who only buys products out of sheer loyalty if it has a specific logo on the cover.

First and foremost, I care about movies and them being presented in High Definition. I chose what I thought would be the best way to present them, and I turned out to be on the winning side.

I would not be so short-sighted as to settle for nothing instead of the competing format, and I highly doubt 98% of the people who say they would are willing to do the same.

There are, afterall, lots of democrats who have yet to move to Canada (as they promised) after the last presidential election.

I expect people would purchase HD-DVD, albeit reluctantly, had the situation been reversed.

Thankfully, that isn't the case.

Those Venturer players were just rebadged Toshiba HD-A3s, so you would have been supporting Toshiba anyway, LOL. I think Fox's disdain for HD DVD was more a lack of a BD+ like secondary security layer than HDi.

If blu folded, there would be no other way to watch HD execept for over compressed downloads. So I would say yes. And untill the next UHDTV-OLED-HVD pakaged format, I would have always entered the house and wondered - what's that smell?.

indeed.

i'm not SO attached to BD that if the war were so obviously tilting against us, i'd choose to go down with the ship.
