Default "Why should I buy a PS3?"

With the format war officailly over this is the question I'm getting from some friends and family.

Does anyone know some good links with summaries of the abilities and greatness of the PS3?

Tell them to ignore the game part if they want to. As a Blu-ray player, it is ONE of the most future proof, with it's ability to get firmware updates. And for the price, it is one of, if not THE, best Bluray player on the market with its ability to handle some of the best audio and video out there.

Plus, tell them it puts the internet on their TV, so they dont have to leave the couch anymore to go check their email.

I had thought the Blu-Ray remote would be sub-par but it really is my favorite remote. It just seems to respond so much faster then any of the Infra-red remotes I've used.

Bluetooth is the way to go for remotes in the future, but it will take a long time for tvs and other things to adopt it. It was one of those things that you don't relize you want until you use it.

Like the people who think that a DVD looks great, until they try Blu-Ray.

The only reason not to get a PS3 is that extras could get expencive. If you Never play no problem, but it you sometimes play you may find yourself buying an extra controller, or a $60 game, or a 2 (or 4) controller Charger. You also might forget to sleep, because you are playing with your PS3.

I would expect that in a year or two there will be Blu-Players that are much less expencive than the PS3, right now it's hard to justify anythine else.

Thanks Blu-Beard (and everyone else ) That's the sort of thing I'm looking for. Just don't want to have to explain every little thing over and over to people largely unfamiliar with the PS3 (plus there's stuff I'm not totally sure about .

It really is a no brainer. Anyone who is in the market for a blu ray player might as well get the PS3. You get more bang for the buck! You get one of the best blu ray players on the market, you get internet connection, you get constant firmware updates, plus you happen to get a damn good gaming machine. It's by far the best value for the money. Why WOULDN'T someone choose the PS3 as their blu ray player of choice?

An illustration I made at Yahoo Answers. Not that it's too relevant to your specifics, just thought I'd share.

Think of all 3 major console systems in this illustration. 360 has a huge running head start with 360 fanboys cheering him on to run faster the whole way. Man, 360 is clearly in the lead without the other two even starting. The Wii is set up in a giant sling shot and shoots out about a mile behind 360. 360 makes it another half mile and something whizzes by him. He says, "Where'd that little white dude come from?" The Wii still with a good trajectory is still going strong and looks to leave 360 in the distance. At the same time the Wii was getting shot out, a massive shuttle had just fired it's engines. It's not moving much at all, but it's packing some major weight. Through the window you see Big Black, the sleek PS3. It starts moving slowly and through every quarter mile or so it picks up more and more speed. Even the Wii can still hear the sounds of the rockets going strong even after thinking he left PS3 in the dust from the get go. Between the 1.5 and 2.0 mile marker, the 360 sees the huge shuttle behind him and he's already tired his momentum is slowing. Suddenly, he sees his own shadow in a sustaining Blu flash, and that is the last thing he remembers happening. Reserve rockets attached to the side of the shuttle have ignited Blu flames. As the cloud of dust settles behind the Wii man, he sees in his rear view mirror as the shuttle emerges from the cloud. Big Black says with a smile, "2008, Here I come"

The PS3 is a tank. A well-built, class-act piece of equipment any adult can be proud to own - not just kids. HDMI out, 1080p... DVD upscaling to 1080p, on-board Blu' player, USB connectors, Memory card connectors (on certain models), motion axis controller with many games, extremely light controller with wireless battery that lasts 10 times as long as the 360's battery system, you don't have to pay a cent to play games on-line unlike the 360... what's not to love?

one thing i'd like to add, which is contrary to what others are saying is that a standalone player, instead of the ps3, is probably the better choice for those who are not as tech savvy as we are and would feel more comfortable with something that looks and acts like your old dvd player, instead of a super-computer/gaming/blu-ray player that we all know and love

But, the PS3 isn't rocket science either. Pop in a Blu Ray and it plays automatically.

One thing though regarding PS3, broadband internet should be present in the household if nothing more than to download updates when needed. Wireless would be preferable. If internet is not of any priority in the household then you might just be that old fashioned and would want a standalone for your HDTV (the other requirement, why you want a Blu-Ray player in the first place)

I would tell them to think of it more as an upgradeable home entertainment system than just a gaming platform.

If your friends and family visit you often, here's what you can do.

Demo it for them. There is nothing better than seeing it with their own eyes what the PS3 can do.
