Hah! I love Duke Nukem. I laughed so much at his comments in the original 3-D game. I was really hooked on the game. I sent them an e-mail which read in part, "It's official. I'm addicted." They quoted me on one of their advertising flyers along with a bunch of other people.

"Hmmm, don't have time to play with myself." -Duke Nukem, the other Chuck Norris.

Duke Nukem Forever? It's still in development?

Must have been at least 10 years so far.

They know my name down there. I asked what was up and they had development issues. They changed the game engine a few times and even started over. In reality, this rendition is less than 5 years in the making. Which is average for a game of this nature.

Don't ask me about release dates. I don't ask and they don't even tell their mothers.

OH, I remember they wanted peopel to submit funny lines for the game. I submitted some with, "You piss off Wang. Now Wang piss on you!" That was a bit too low brow, even for them.

At the time the game was released I was writing game reviews for an online mag. I wrote the review for Shadow Warrier with lots of humor. 3DRealms wrote me to say how much they enjoyed the review.

I thought your screen name was familiar. I think you wrote for EnterMedia, right?

I think they became EnterMedia after I stopped writing. I am shocked you would know such a thing. That was years ago.

I had a bunch of reviews for mostly DOS based games, which were still popular during the Windows transitions. The editor told me he kept them up for a long time because they were very popular reads.

I recall reviewing the Terminator 3D shooter. The game was aweful, but the review rocked. I wrote a "story" intro and it really sucked you in. Then I had to talk about the game...

I know I have printed copies of those reviews someplace, and probably still have the reviews under an old DOS file format.

I remember it because I owned it! After we became EnterMedia we had a ton of success for a while, although back in those days it was super-hard to break even on a content web site (this is 1997 we're talking about... just before the dot-com explosion... I remember paying $2k/month for web hosting ), and we were forced to fold. Some of our affiliates were sold off to UGO and IGN and a few others that were just starting, but had a TON of money behind them because they were backed by print publishers. It's fun to see now all the various gaming sites out there thriving--I feel proud to be a trailblazer for that. You should, too!

If you can't find them, I know I've got copies of your old reviews stored on a CD-R somewhere. And I remember that Shadow Warrior review... George Broussard gushed to me at E3 about it. We had a pretty good relationship with the 3D Realms guys back then--EnterMedia broke the scoop about Duke Nukem Forever (hail to the King of Vaporware, baby!).

Now wait a minute, as I recall you were all of 17 or so when you started that site. Wow, never thought I'd run into you again. I guess I should be proud to be part of the trail blazing. Too bad we never became big names in reporting gaming.

George e-mailed me about the SW review, but he gushed to you over it? Wow. Any idea how I can get an e-book published? I have something I'd like to see "out there".

Ya, I was just a kid back then. I sometimes talk to Chris, who now works for CNN in Atlanta, but you're the first I've ran into other than him in a loooong time. Glad to know we're both Blu-ray fanatics!

I was pretty tight with the guys from id Software and 3d Realms back then. But I've lost a lot of respect for 3dR over the last decade for being so lazy about releases.

As for getting your ebook published, in today's market the best way for a previously unpublished author to get a book in print is to self-publish. It's relatively cheap. And once you can prove to a publisher that you're able to sell your self-published book to an audience (minimum is usually 2-5k copies) then you might get some serious distribution through one of the majors.
