While there are a few 1080i crt sets in the USA, the majority are standard def. I'm not sure whether there are any in the Uk. The majority of crts sets are therefore inable to display the full res of a hi-def picture/Blu-Ray disc. Even if Blu-Ray is able to scale down it's pictures to standard def, what would be the point? For all the expense of a Blu-Ray player and movies, you might as well stick to dvds as all you would end up with is a slightly better looking standard def picture.

well not all of us can afford an HD set so i was hoping that it would be possible to watch it on my set. i don't mind paying for the new speakers to go with blue ray but an HD set is pretty expensive

IMO, unless you have a hdtv with min 720p native, there's little if any point buying a Blu-Ray player. Also, if you can't afford a HDTV, then there's a good chance you won't be able to afford a Blu-Ray player with the first likely to cost in the region of £1,000. Also, compatible amps/speakers capable of delivering the new lossless dolby digital sound will be expensive at first. Though obviously Blu-y will still carry standard DD 5.1, (though at a higher bit rate meaning noticeably higher than dvd quality sound).

it should work just fine, but as was noted already the quality wont be optimal
the only reason it might not work, for some of the discs, is if they are flagged for HDCP protection and your current crt set doesnt have HDCP support (like im sure is the case) but seeing how things are progressing, HDCP might turn out a complete flop even before it starts being used, so no worries there. EDIT: hmm, i just was reminded that even for hdcp-flagged discs, players should be outputting unprotected standard-def signal on the analog outputs, so now there's absolutely no reason it wouldn't work |
