In the last few weeks I've noticed (here in Canada) a significant increase in the number of DVD's that are packaged in blue cases. This seems rather odd to me, as it must be confusing as hell for the consumer. It is obviously a planned strategy by the studios, but I fail to understand the reason for it and what they would view as the benefit.
If there are any marketing experts out there, could you enlighten me as to this "ploy"(?).... |

um this is nothing new. For years ive seen a ton of blue, red, and other color cases on dvds. I dont think there is anything nefarious going on about it. The benefit is that it gets your attention, its not being done as a ploy to make people think its blu-ray. It just makes it stand out in a sea of black cases.

Heres a sampling of some cases ive seen Austin Powers Goldmember - BLUE CASE Rose Red- RED CASE That Darn Cat - WHITE CASE Two Brothers- WHITE CASE I, Robot- CLEAR CASE a slew of fox movies - SILVER CASES Legally Blonde 2 - PINK CASE Thats just off the top of my head. The point is, ive seen every color case on dvd for years. Sure black is the standard, but multi color cases are nothing new. Like ive said, walk up and down your best buy aisles and you will see all kinds of color cases. Its nothing new. Rose Last edited by AliceT; 08-15-2008 at 01:49 PM. |

either way, I understand there are different colored cases, and they "exist" (so 10 out of 3,000 is a "ton" ??? ) I've never really looked for them, but the OP said he saw a lot of them, so either 1) he's more focused on it now or 2) they are releasing more Standard DVDs in blue cases (as he's stating) I know there is an Orange VHS, and even a Green one..... but I wouldn't say they released "a ton of colored VHS" ![]() |

Besides, anyone that buys a blue cased dvd and THINKS it was the blu-ray version, even though its MUCH LARGER and most likely cheaper, deserves to be ripped off for not paying attention. |

You completely misinterpretted what Beta-Man said! ![]() All he was saying that he doesn't recall out of 1,200 movies that have a different colored case, not that he believed none existed. Also he was commenting towards you stating that you said that there are a 'ton' of DVDs out there with different colored case than Black and you provided 7 movies out of your 3000, which is .23%. Now you may be saying "Oh of course there are more, but I just can't think of more". Then you would be in the same boat as Beta-Man as he stated he couldn't think of anymore and you are being an ******* to him for the same thing you are doing yourself. |

To the OP, maybe you're more perceptive to the color of the case now, or perhaps there truely are more being released. Obviously older releases shouldn't be looked at, but I'd curious to examine the number of newer releases not using the standard black cases in comparison to the past. It could also just be a larger strategy, since companies try to differentiate their products to add preceived value, and the color of the case is a cheap way to do that.... even cheaper than slip-covers etc... Fletch had a release with a lenticular cover etc.... It would be interesting to see if it's one studio in particular that is doing it too ![]() |

In any case, if distributors are being "nefarious" by purposely packaging their DVDs in blue cases (which I don't think is their intent), it's a sign that "blue" is being noticed. It means they recognize the power of blu-ray. Deceptive? Maybe, but it will serve consumers in making sure they're more knowledgeable of the technology they are buying into. |

Snowball Express was in a blue box. Big Fish was in a clear one with a doublesided art cover. Most of the ones I've had are in the black ones though. |

As far as the Austin Powers movies..... I didn't care for them, and don't own them..... I may have one in a blue case.... again, the OP said he's seeing "many more" specifically in blue cases, and so far I haven't seen anything to lead me to believe there WERE, or ARE a lot of colored cases out there ![]() No need to be condencending, just trying to understand the OP's point/experience..... your approach of "you're an idiot.... where have you been" type of attitude doesn't really help in proving him either right, or wrong..... Also, everyone is questioning me for saying there are a ton like them out there. Yet no one is asking the OP where are the examples of all these cases hes suddenly seeing. I personally saw 1 new release in the past few weeks that had a blue case, but it also had a slip cover over it, i dont recall the title. So for clarification, where are the slew of new titles with blue cases he is talking about? His exact words were a signifigant increase. To notice an increase is to acknowledge that there have been some in the past and he is seeing more. What is "signifigant" in this case? Like ive said, ive seen 1. Enough said. You're intent at arguing, when the subject isn't very controversial to begin with.... and I've already stated that I haven't seen evidence to support, or refute the OP's comments......... Quote:
![]() He just made an observation, he didn't conduct a scientific testing ![]() We'll leave the topic "Open to more examples" if anyone has seen similar things at retail/online, please contribute ![]() |
