Default Blu-ray difference in quality....

Hello...Newbie here.

I've finally done it!! I've bought a PS3 and i'm in love with it and want to have its babies

Have watched a few movies and one thing that i've noticed is the difference in quality of some blu-ray discs. For example Con Air was amazing, fine detail that you could almost touch BUT Mission Impossible was imo only a "very" good picture. These movies are from a similar time (the 90's) so i would have presumed would look as good as each other.

There's probably a really hi-tech answer that won't make any sense to me but thought i'd mention it anyway.

Welcome to the forum! You Will find that some movies look better and others don't. MI from Paramount was not the best of prints used IMO. Some of the earlier released titles were not given the respect that HDM fans demand. Studio heads were slow to realise this, but things have become much better and very fast now. Most titles though look incredible!

Have fun and enjoy the PS3!

Welcome to the site.

Yeah, the quality can vary and there are lots of factors that may influence that (such as the source/master, directors intent, the bitrates for the codec being used, how much processing they do on the film, when the title was released on blu-ray, etc.). That's why you'll find a lot of threads asking about the PQ and SQ of various titles. IMO, most look great though and all the ones I've seen are at the very least better than the DVD.

Welcome to blu-ray and to the forums. Might I suggest a few titles to check-out, either buy or rent.
1. Casino Royale
2. Cars
3. Pirates of the Carribean: any or all three titles

These are just a few suggestions check out this thread for more ideas.

Top 3 Blu-rays
I would echo the 3 choices above and throw in: The Fifth Element (remastered), Sunshine, and Shoot'Em Up.

All have absolutely great video and audio. You simply cannot go wrong with any of these choices.

welcome to BD and the forum.

the technical answer to your comment about some movies looking great and some looking not-as is actually pretty simple... basically, GIGO - garbage in, garbage out. if the source material (whatever the studio decided to burn onto the disc) doesn't look pristine, then obviously no matter how incredible your AV equipment is, the movie's never going to look pristine on your system.

there is then a lot more stuff explaining WHY source material doesn't look pristine... poorly cared for film masters, poorly done masters, directorial intent, etc etc etc...

Welcome to the forum mate.. just a few links that'll probably help you out occasionally.. there's a region B/UK bargain thread and I also recommend you check out the region free sections of both movietyme.com and also dvdworldusa.com, you don't have to worry about paying import duty etc when importing from them since they've already included that in the price. Movietyme does games as well so you can get those before they're out over here sometimes.. (all PS 3 games are region free)

Older movie are only limited by the budget they have for restoration... and most of the time.. it's nothing but using an old master

Thankfully, Sony use i a new scanner on most of their release to give the best of what the master can do. Fifth Element was a test, they used it on Run Lola Run and they are currently doing Ghostbuster with it..

I fully concur. Cracked open Fifth Element last night and didn't expect too much. But I was very surprised by how beautiful it looked. So crisp! Welcome and enjoy!!
