Default Grain when watching blu ray on regza 40"

I just got my new toshiba regza 40" 1080p TV and i hooked my ps3 up to it. All the settings updated, i have it set to 1080p through hdmi and everything looks amazing my games and everything. then i put a blu ray in and its almost like i see more grain then i did when i had it on my 720p tv. Is there a reason this is happeneing? should i turn the game mode on my tv off when watching or is it some other setting? thanks

The TV settings can definitely exaggerate the grain if there is any present. Try turning down the sharpness if you have that cranked up.

another thing i noticed was that only the background ususally looks grainy, if theres a character on screen, he will look perfect and the background not so much

It might be that the movie you are watching has grain (intentional or due to a poor master). Does the problem occur with all Blu-ray movies?

You should absolutely turn Game Mode off. Put it on whatever they call movie mode and calibrate it

I've tried everything, changing the sharpness, calibrating it with the ratatouille blu ray, tried to eye ball it by changing settings, but i always see grain. Its not like really bad but i mean i never noticed it while playing it on my 720p sony, its just a little frustrating concidering i wanted to make the step up to 1080p

Very likely you had some noise reduction circuit turned up to max on there that stripped detail like crazy as well

Twice the pixels, twice the resolution, so twice the small details liike grain come out

Check your manual - you want the movie or cinema mode, and turn off all the 'improvements' that are usually on by default. Sharpness should be set as low as possible generally.

maybe what you are seeing is video artifacts from decompression. blu-ray is compressed video and lossy.

Do a forums search on this. Theres already enough mentioned on this subject to satisfy your questions. Grain is part of the deal with Blu-Ray. It's how the movie is filmed and produced. I personally think the types of grainy overtones add to the PQ. You do, however, need to get your set calibrated, but that won't remove the effect of a grainy looking movie. It will prolong the lifespan of your set and give you a better overall color scale.

Grain is good. Grain is your friend. Embrace the grain and live in harmony with the grain.

Now, go surround yourself in white light and have a really expensive glass of wine. You deserve it.

You will find that after time passes with BD experience that grain can be your friend. In fact, The more grain, the higher the PQ. Take 300 for example...

To overly simplify things... Grain is tiny crystals or silver on the film that record an image when it is exposed to light. The size of the grain is dependent on the speed of the film stock and whether the cinematographer over or underexposed the negative.

For instance the 300 was shot on iso 500 speed film and Larry Fong underexposed in most scenes by 2 stops. This left an immense amount of grain on the image. But the payoff is he was able to shoot amazing slow motion sequences without a huge amount of light. It's not always budget related since Transformers was mostly shot on 500 speed stock. But the faster the film speed the larger the crystals and the more grain you will see. Also many cinematographers underexpose the film and then push it to correct exposure in the lab to bump up the contrast and give the film a harsh look... for example Mathew Libatique did this with The Fountain, this causes more grain. While in Requiem for a Dream he overexposed most of the scenes and pulled the film giving the image a softer look.

Now on the other hand in a film like Pirates cinematographer Darius Wolski chose to shoot the daylight scenes on iso 50 speed film stock which has smaller crystals and therefore much less grain... in fact it's hardly noticeable except in a theater.

All film has some grain whether you notice it or not if you blew the image up large enough you will see grain. I love it and think it adds to the experience. It's not usually something the Director decides to throw in for effect... this does happen every now and then, like in the Grindhouse pictures, but overall this is very rare.

I hope this helps!

And in case you're wondering I shoot film for a living...
