I really enjoyed The Last Samurai, if you want to see *Tom Cruise's greatest (Acadamy Award nominated) performance watch Oliver Stone's Born on the Fourth of July.

* In my opinion

What a journey! I am sure everyone here has either seen it or read the reviews. It ranks up there with films like Gladiator, 300 and Kingdom of Heaven. I never would have believed this possible from a Tom Cruise movie.

Boasting impressive PQ and AQ, The Last Samurai is a story that sweeps viewers into 19th century Japan with expansive character development, sweeping vistas, highly-detailed costume design, an emotional Hans Zimmer score -- all embedded in an immersive story that is well-acted by a dynamic cast, and brilliantly directed and edited. The surround sound mix was very aggressive and placed this viewer right in the center of the action.

The Last Samurai is a MUST-HAVE Blu-ray for every motion picture aficionado. The climax of the movie reduced me to a blubbering mass of flesh.

What did you think of The Last Samurai?

I felt much the same way that you did after the first time that I viewed this film. You're not alone in that sentiment, trust me on that.

Tom Cruise just didn't pull off the roll. He lacked the authority to make it believable, and I have a problem with these types of narcissistic white male trips unless the actor can really pay it off. But it was very well done, other than the lead roll.

I loved the movie when it came out and bought the dvd. I would have bought the blu ray but its one of the first gen BD mpeg-2 IMO the PQ isnt much better then a upscaled dvd. I just cant bring my self to buy one of those first gen releases. I'll buy it if they ever re-encode it.

Last Samurai uses VC-1 and not MPEG-2.

Best scene ever is when he's drunk off his Ass and is supposed to be demonstrating his shooting skills to the crowd and he just ends up scaring the hell out of everyone.

Well, I was somewhat dissapointed since I thought it was thematically and storywise basically a rip-off of Dances With Wolves, which is by far the superior film.

I'm happy that you enjoyed it though.

I liked it better when it was called "Dances With Wolves", but genericism aside, it was still a heartfelt and affecting film.

I thought it was merely okay. Nothing special. Hans' music was definitely the highlight of it.

I remember the movie just as being an ok flick. Got the DVD and since I am going through all my movies to check which ones to keep and which to upgrade to BD I sure will be watching this again soon.
Cannot remember it as very moving though.
