Thumbs up I just cried my eyes out

Skipping the Academy Awards show tonight, I instead opted to watch a Blu-ray disc of a film I had not yet seen: The Last Samurai (purchased during the last Amazon B2G1 promotion).

What a journey! I am sure everyone here has either seen it or read the reviews. It ranks up there with films like Gladiator, 300 and Kingdom of Heaven. I never would have believed this possible from a Tom Cruise movie.

Boasting impressive PQ and AQ, The Last Samurai is a story that sweeps viewers into 19th century Japan with expansive character development, sweeping vistas, highly-detailed costume design, an emotional Hans Zimmer score -- all embedded in an immersive story that is well-acted by a dynamic cast, and brilliantly directed and edited. The surround sound mix was very aggressive and placed this viewer right in the center of the action.

The Last Samurai is a MUST-HAVE Blu-ray for every motion picture aficionado. The climax of the movie reduced me to a blubbering mass of flesh.

What did you think of The Last Samurai?

I enjoyed Last Samurai quite a bit. It would have been one of my first Blu-ray purchases if it had a better soundtrack.

I really liked it.

Heh, when I saw your title I thought you must have just finished watching The Bridge to Terabithia.

Ditto! One of Tom Cruise's best films ever! And this was back when Tom Cruise was still "Tom Cruise", before he went all crazy for Katie Holmes!

Very good movie, It's one of those films you'll end up watching once a year like Starwars.

Definitely a great movie, though the only movie to ever get me in tears is Rudy. The ending gets me every time.

I saw 'The Last Samurai' twice in theatres! It gets two thumbs up on all fronts as a film.

As for a BD, the PQ is better than average and the AQ is average... but the film itself was still definitely worth the upgrade purchase.

I thought this was an awesome movie all around. I haven't picked it up yet, in hopes that Warner Brother will re-release this with lossless sound. But certainly one of the best movies Tom Cruise has been in ever.

One of those movies that catches you off guard, I mean Tom Cruise as a samurai???? No way! So I decided to watch it one night and couldn't believe how good it turned out to be. One of Tom's best!

Wait, wait, wait...You skipped the Oscars to watch a Tom Cruise movie?!? Ludicrous. I've never actually seen The Last Samurai though. I actually have it right now from Netflix, and have had it for like a month almost, I just can't bring myself to watch a Tom Cruise movie (although I did just watch Eyes Wide Shut, but that was a Kubrick movie). Based on your sentiments though, I will definitely watch it, considering 300 and Kingdom of Heaven were both phenomenal (I've never actually seen Gladiator either....I know, blasphemy!).

I thought it wasn't worth my time. However, seeing No Country for Old Men take the Oscar for best picture, directors, supporting actor, and adaptation - definitely was...

Anyone know if this has the sound mix at really low levels to where you have to crank up the sound? I had the HDDVD version and it had this known sound mix problem.

As Bill Murray asked in Stripes: Who didn't cry at the end of Old Yeller?
