My older receiver will not decode the new lossless audios.
My receiver has optical in, but not HDMI in. Sonys new upcoming 550 will decode all the new lossless audio. If I get the new Sony 550 and send the audio to my receiver via optical, will I be able to appreciate the lossless audio to its fullest? Thanks ![]() |

![]() ...optical cable will only give you 2.0 Lossless. If your current receiver doesn't have multichannel analog inputs, then you will never have lossless 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound without a true HDMI receiver. Optical doesn't cut the mustard. |

Well, if you're receiver has multi-channel analog inputs, you just saved yourself hundreds of dollars in your quest to have uncompressed multi-channel surround sound. If you want to spend the dough for a new receiver, go ahead. A digital optical cable simply doesn't have enough bandwidth to pass more than 2 channels of uncompressed audio.
Uncompressed audio through multi-channel analog inputs sounds great. Audiophiles have been doing it for years. |

This is my first post, so I would like to thank the members that have provided me with valuable info. Thanks and I hope to contribute myself. So, I contacted Samsung to make sure my bd-1400 can output the uncompressed pcm and the master audio discs I do have before I go and buy more. They told me yes it does, even though it doesn't say so on their site. I also asked just for the fun of it what cable I should use to stream this uncompressed audio. They said optical, both times I called. I told them I heard that optical can't do this and that I would have to use coaxial or hdmi.
I suppose I have three questions here. 1Would the digital coaxial out on the bd-1400 be multichannel. 2. I think I read here that pcm or master audio is similar to wma, is this true. 3. Should I tell the techs at Samsung to go back to school. Oh yeah #4. I put my HT info in my signature, how do I stamp it at the end of my posts like the cool people. Yes those people are retarded. Coax won't do it either. HDMI or mulitchannel Analog are the only ways to get Mulitchannel Lossless audio. What is your receiver. Does it have multichannel analog inputs? |

Cost wise I'd probably feel his dilemma on getting a new receiver. Otherwise, its a great excuse to upgrade now to the plethoria of new HDMI, DTS HD MA and Dolby True HD receivers. Im trying real hard not to upgrade even tho my receiver is only a year old.

To my understanding, the BD-1400 can internally decode Dolby TrueHD but not Dts-HD MA (which it only bitstreams)...someone correct me if I am wrong. so with multichannel analog and your BD-1400 you can enjoy Uncompressed PCM and Dolby TrueHD tracks...for bitstream Dts-HD MA you will need an HDMI v1.3 receiver with decoding ability. And the service people who said to use an Optical cable have no clue what they are speaking on. Which is typical of any customer service department. |

I am waiting on an email from a Samsung rep to confirm if the BD-P1400 can decode DTS HD Master Audio. The specs on their site say DTS HD Decoder = yes. But HD HR or HD MA. So they should be getting back to me tommorow and i'll post what they told me if anyone is interested.

Sorry but what do you mean added. Can it or can't it decode MA. And would I have to buy a receiver that can.

The original release of firmware for the P1400 did not support MA at all. This is the only HD audio format that must be passed on to an AVR for decoding, all others can be decoded and passed out of the P1400's 5.1 analog port. Since I have an older AVR, I have to use the 5.1 analog output to feed HD audio (except DTS HD-MA) to my AVR. The P1400 will decode the "core" DTS HD-MA track, which is still very good, but not the best possible. |
