Default PS3+605 and TrueHD

OK I've done the searching and please someone tell me if this is correct. For a PS3 and 605 over HDMI, to get a TrueHD track it's: PCM on PS3 and Direct on the Onkyo, but you won't see the TrueHD light on the Onkyo. I'm a noob on receiver stuff but from what I pieced together here, I got the right idea? Sorry to all the forum ghestopo, but I wanted to verify. You can get 50 different suggestions from the search function.

Yes, if you set your PS3 to PCM your set for all cases. You will only get core DTS, but bitstreaming won't change that, because the PS3 can neither decode nor bitstream DTS HD MA.

So the decoding happens in the PS3 and the DD light will not light on your 605.

What will light up is the word Multichannel on the display of the 605.

Ya I know it can't do the HD MA but I was under the impression it can do TrueHD.

TrueHD and DTS HD MA are two different things right?

Ok never mind, I think I got you PCM+Direct should cover all the bases. Or at least the ones that can be covered.

Had that 605 a week now, I'm starting to learn how to use it. Most options on any gadget I've ever had, I was worried that tech might me for a second.

Cool, thanks both of you. Just noticed now if I hit display it does say TrueHD as the source. Just have to learn not to trust what the receiver says as fact.

You guys

Well the receiver is telling you the truht.. the PS3 decode TrueHD in LPCM and send it to you,re receiver.. than it shows MULTI CH in front witch it is.

With the PS3 you can't have the Bitstream native signal sent since the HDMI 1.3 chip version can't do this physically...

One day the PS3 might do DTS HD MA/HR ....

Another noob question. Is this the same with all Onkyo receivers like the 705 and higher?

I have an older 702 and want to sell it and upgrade since it doesn't have HDMI and have just begun to pay attention to these threads.

Yes, from what I understand the 705-805 have more HDMI inputs and more wattage. Other then that, it's the same thing (besides the cool blue light). Also not positive but they can 'matrix' 5.1 into 7.1. Cause with 605 5.1 is heard from the center/fronts/sides, won't use the backs. That is the ONLY negative thing I have to say about it. Honestly I just moved the sides back about 2 feet (from the spot I sit) and it sounds great.

Im new to the 605 also...

And im a bit confused now..

Does it make a difference if I use 1.3a HDMI cable or should the TrueHD work without it.

If I have my PS3=Linear PCM and the 605 set to Direct, it dosnt' sound all that great and also my subwoofer won't come on.

But if I set the PS3=Linear PCM and the 605 to almost anything else I notice the PL II is displayed and the subwoofer will come on.

This is not correct.. if the PLII light come on it mean it's receiving 2ch PCM sound. Did you did the Audio Setup on the PS3?, make sure that all the case are selected (if you don't have a 7.1 setup don't select 7.1 options)..

The Direct Mode skip all processing and give you the sound as it is. This is good for Music but not for movies..

1. Yes I did do the Audio Setup(from what I know, I have it on L PCM)
2. I do not know what you mean by 'make sure that all the case are selected

as far as I know I don't have the 7.1 setup

As I have posted in another thread I am a newbie with the 605.
I finally figured out how to get the multichannel PCM to display on the 605

My question is why can't or what is need to get 'TrueHD' to become displayed on the 605?

...answered in the other post. You need a bluray player that can bitstream TrueHD and Dts MA.

So why does the PS3 display 'Dolby TrueHD' when you click the display button?

Or is the PS3 decoding the Dolby TrueHD?
and
If so am I really getting the TrueHD with Mulit PCM displayed?
but,
I would need a blu-ray player to bitstream to the Receiver and when the decoding process is in effect from the reciever that's when the light will show "TrueHD"?

Yes, the PS3 is internally decoding TrueHD. This converts it back into PCM, which is then sent as Linear PCM to the receiver (already decoded) which is why it displays as Multichannel.

correct. In order for the Onkyo to Display "TrueHD" or "Dts-HD Master" you need bluray player with bitstream ability. The PS3 does not.

Ok, thanks
I believe I understand now and I really know that I wasted money on getting the 1.3 HDMI cable's.

I guess those are for the Blu-ray player that will be bitstreamming the audio.

Reading alot of websites they are good for the new audio(TrueHD and DTS-Master HD)
