Question 605 AND DTS HD MA or TrueHD (How is it displayed)

I have the 605 and both the BD30 and PS3. I will be uploading the new FW updates to the PS3 tonight. I am running both players to the amp via HDMi.

How do I get the DTS HD MA and TrueHD to actually show up on the amp. At the moment it shows up as small red text above DVD.

Cheers in advance.

It shouldn't show anything but Multichannel, since the PS3 is sending it out as PCM, since the PS3 is the decoder. The PS3 cannot bitstream so you won't get DTS-HD MA to show anywhere on your receiver.

I don't have the BD-30 so I cannot answer how that one would work out...

This is true as I have a PS3 and the 805. The BD-30 will probably show the DTS or True HD logos however as that can bitstream the audio.

Well all i have sofar is PCM with the PS3 but the BD30 does show TrueHD or DTS HD MA but in small red text. Just wondering how can the larger text be shown instead of the word "DVD".

At least I know where i stand with the PS3 thanks for that.

Interesting thing with the PS3 and DTS HD MA, if you set it to Bitstream (after todays update) it will still only send out the core at 1.5mbps.

Ok so why does this matter? Well if you really want to know what you've been missing you can now switch between the core and HDMA on the PS3. Try it out, i was shocked at how much better Ronin sounded.

I remember all those early pictures of the receiver showing DTS-MA listed on the display. I wonder that when they made the final design, that was removed, and then they just went with the little displays. It would make since for them to use it for their display units so they could tout the receiver as being DTS-MA certified for decoding...I wonder...

On page 55 of the US English manual, it states to cycle through the additional on-screen dispays, press the display button...

It goes from:

DVD 48
DolbyD 5.1
DVD Dolby D

By their example anyways, maybe that will work...

Not sure how the display works, sorry I can't help with that. On a side note, be careful when Bitstreaming with you BD-30. There is a thread here, the name of which escapes me at the moment, that talked about how Bitstreaming DTS-MA can cause a loud pop(like a gun), damaging your speakers. I will do a search and post that link here for you to read over. The PS3 is safe however as it decodes internally.

Really?!?!? That is AWESOME to know! I was wondering how I was going to sample between the core DTS and DTS HD MA tracks when showing off how HD audio is all important to the experience. You wouldn't believe how many people tell me that I wasted thousands of dollars on my surround sound because "surround sound doesn't really do anything to a movie".

It's time to edumacte thems!!!

I was wondering the same thing, I just got my 705 and hooked it up today to my PS3 and was wondering why the dts-hd and true hd weren't displayed. So even though they're not displayed, I'm still getting the hd sound, right? Anybody with an onkyo, what listening mode should I have it on? I thought it was wierd that I could select a dts listening mode while watching a movie in true hd.

With the BD-30, go to Set-up, select Audio, select Digital Audio Output, set everything to bitstream and Secondary Audio to off.

On the Onkyo, from the menu, pick option (5) Listening Mode Preset, pick your input souce to which the BD-30 is connected (mine is DVD), you can then set your preferences according to the type of signal being sent to the receiver. Set True HD to True HD and DTS MA to DTS MA and whenever you are bitstreaming these codecs to the receiver you will get the large display indicating such.

You should also be able to use the listening modes buttons at the bottom of your remote to search through the various modes. I find the set-up as outlined above to be best. The receiver will automatically switch to whichever hi-def audio codec being btstreamed to it.

Also don't forget to select the audio you want using the disc menu, not all default to the hi-def audio.

I have a PS3 so I am not able to bitstream hd audio, I have to use Linear PCM. Reading some other threads, I am not using any Dolby or DTS mixes, my receiver says PCM Multichannel and my PS3 dispaly says True HD or DTS-MA. I think this is right. Can somebody confirm this please? Thanks

ps3 should be set to linear pcm and it will display multichannel pcm on the display.

and there is a firmware update to all you ONKYO users for the sonic boom pop problem.

yup PS3 can not bitstream HD audios you have to use LPCM to hear the HD audios on your disks which any reciever will say PCM multichannel - HD audio like DD Tru and DTS MA is decoded by PS3 - try updating you PS3 to get the latest DTS MA decoder and try it out switch it from LPCM and Bitstream you will hear a big Difference....

one question for everyone. When playing a SD DVD with a DD or dts track, do you guys use bitstream? If I continue to use Linear PCM, my receiver still shows multichannel PCM. Not sure which one is better? I know when watching a blu ray with True HD or dts HD, ill use linear PCM to get those tracks. just wondering about the regular sd dvds with the regular dolby digital or dts tracks. thanks

I don't see how it would make a difference. Unless you really care about your receiver displaying "Dolby Digital", it's absolutely the same. If you bitstream it, you're letting the receiver decode the audio, which will give you the Dolby Digital displayed on the receiver. Otherwise, LPCM will make the ps3 decode, and it will just say multichannel on the receiver instead. Sound quality wise though, it's the exact same thing.

so basically the ps3 will decode dts or dolby digital on regular SD dvds? so either way, linear pcm or bitstream, the audio is the same? like a present, the ps3 is just opening before the receiver is.
