Default Need a little technical assistance please

I have a Sony BDPS500 blu-ray that I have connected to a Yamaha RXV661 via HDMI. When I insert a standard DVD everything will work fine to the menu. I play the movie, the screen flickers, I'll lose my picture and sound. If I switch sources on my receiver, like to DTV and then back to DVD, then everything works fine. It does not happen with all standard DVDs and it never happens with blu-ray DVDs. If I connect the BDPS500 directly to my TV with a HDMI it does not happen at all. I only have one HDMI input on my TV so that is why I need to do it through my receiver. I believe it is a setting with my receiver but Yamaha has been little help. Does anyone have any advice on the issue, I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Assuming that nothing is defective, it appears that there may be a problem with the setup of the Blu-Ray player, the Yamaha Receiver, and the TV. Try to change the settings and see if that corrects the problem. Also try to attach the Blu-Ray player to the receiver by component cables to see if the problem is caused by the HDMI cable. Read the following reviews by other users. A few of them may have the same type of problem.

Thanks for the info & links, I will give the components a try. It is just a little hard to swallow because before I found this site and did a little reading about cables I spent $200 on HDMI cables. This is the second receiver, the first I took back to Best Buy and their Geek Squad sent off to fix this same problem but it came back all scratched up so I made them give me a new one. The HDMI cables are brand new as well. I haven't really messed with any settings on either the receiver or blu-ray player, that is why I am so perplexed. I have tried turning the up conversion off on the receiver but it did not help, nor did I really think it would affect the HDMI connections. Thanks again
