Yeah...

They should just shoot the ENTIRE trilogy in IMAX. Not a few scenes, or even an hour. The WHOLE trilogy. Heavy dialogue pieces can be shot in digital LieMAX, but Star Wars was never dialogue heavy.

They can afford it.

Hopefully won't waste their money putting this in 3D. Would be interesting to see figures to see how much more films released in 3D take compared to their 2D counterparts...I honestly can't see them making that much more.

It's on the drop...

Going off the top of my head;

Avatar (2009) - 80+% 3D ticket sales
Brave (2012) - 34?% 3D ticket sales

Kevin Fiege has said that all Marvel Phase 2 films are in 3D. But the Iron Man 3 trailer doesn't support this, nor does it's technical details on IMDB. Man of Steel is 2D, as well as many other upcoming blockbusters.

I am not a hater, so no one get started. Just go look at my blu collection. But 3D should be reserved for certain "thrillride" movies.

Disney, are you reading this? IMAX, IMAX, IMAX!

Why skimp? 70mm film IMAX. And 3-D. Start to finish.

Digital IMAX isn't all that much better than conventional theatres; at least not 'til the company rolls out their 4K laser projection system. But 70mm IMAX is leaps and bounds ahead of almost everything else at the moment.

I thought it would be - people just aren't prepared to pay the ridiculous ticket prices for a cheap gimmick anymore. Film companies simply aren't going to spend money on making something in a format no one wants to see for much longer.

I hope that 3D keeps on being released for those who really do love it, though. It's not fair on them if it goes.

I really do love it. I just see a lot of people in the foyer and seven people in the cinema when I go.

It means me and my son get the seats we want, but it just feels like a waste. That screen is the second biggest in the multiplex, and has got the best sound. Some people are missing out on that, but at $6 a ticket vs. $13, I can see why. I didn't take my boy to Spiderman because I couldn't afford it, and wanted to see it in 3D, and now I regret not sucking it up and going to the 2D. I feel like I robbed him, luckily he doesn't care as much as me...

Those seats are incredible, I must add. There's a gap between the two rows of seating. These two are in the front row of the second lot of seating, which means leg-row galore. Plus, they are front row, centre, and completely ALONE. No one sits either side of us. We stick our bags and popcorn and everything else all around us, like we were at home. Sorry if I'm off topic, but I LOVE those seats!

These will be IMAX and 3D....

many other Blockbusters aren't 3D? Please take a close look, the biggest Blockbusters of the next few years are 3D. Episode 7-9 will be 3D,and thank God for that. There's no bigger thrillride than SW!!

3D is not a cheap gimmick but a film format that's highly profitable. The biggest Blockbusters of the next few years are 3D,get used to it.These movies will be 3D.

3-D sucks a$$! Screw it! It's a complete gimmick, and it's being forced down our throats. If 2-D and 3-D co-existed, I wouldn't mind, but I couldn't even see The Avengers or The Pirates in 2-D in the theater. That's not fair, as I don't want to pay for something I don't care for.

2-D looks way more real than cutout 3-D.

I'll probably wait for the BD releases.

This is accurate because very few movies make 3d worthwhile. Avatar definitely required 3d to watch it.

That's a hell of an article - Johnson makes some really good points, and I could understand more because we're both on the same level of thinking; he doesn't like 3D as it is now, and neither do I.

I've always thought that, if there is a future in 3D, it would have to change and morph into something else: at the moment it seems more gimmicky than professional, simply because of the slap-dash way it seems to be done, and film companies only believe in it because it makes them more money. If a format comes along like RJ and Scorsese describe, then it will be well-worth watching in that --

no more symbolic stick-shaking at the audience, and a more professional approach to something that could change the whole of cinema forever.

Its not a cheap gimmick - its an expensive gimmick. Its a micro-niche fad at best. They've been ramming it down our throats for years now and hardly anyone is buying. if 3D were a stock, it'd be worth about $.04 cents a share and trending down.

3D stank it up big time with Harry Potter, the 4th Pirates, Clash of the Titans, Alice in Wonderland...more people are choosing the 2D options in theater.
The irony is that I think Star Wars is one of the few films that could benefit from 3D.

Gave me a good laugh,I must admit.

You can be assured without a doubt the next trilogy will be in 3D. Everything Disney does is in 3D.

I always thought that 3D was an unnecessary gimmick.

I've had my 3D Sony HDTV for about a year and never bothered to watch anything in 3D.
But with the widespread release of Avatar in 3D, I decided to order some Sony
Titanium 3D glasses.

I just wanted to finally checkout 3D.

So after watching my very first two 3D movies, Avengers and Avatar, I'am now hooked on 3D!
The incredible immersiveness of 3D draws you into the movie, in a way that 2D just can't.
Turns out that 3D is not a gimmick at all.
I find that it adds immeasurably to the enjoyment of movies.

In fact, watching 2D movies now seems so uninvolving.

Success? No, the films themselves were what generated the success, it had ZERO to do with 3D. Please. There isnt anyhthing to get over. Any new Star Wars films will sell way more copies of the 2D versions. Just like the 2D version of every film ever released in 3D will. Its not even close. As I said, its a micro-niche fad for people who think something flying at the screen is still "way" cool.

Thats great - enjoy it. At least you arent disillusioned into thinking its mainstream or the "norm" though. Also, keep in mind that a fairly large percentage of viewers get sick and cant even try watching it.

Either way, cool deal for you.
