I have had a problem several times now where the video on my PS3 cuts out for a few seconds then comes back on (my TV shows lost signal and goes black then comes back); it keeps going on over and over until I turn the system off for a while. It only seems to happen when I have been playing for a while but I haven't seen anyone describe this symptom of overheating (it's usually described as games freezing or the PS3 powering off with a red blinking power light.) If I turn off the system and come back an hour or so later everything seems OK and I am able to play with no problems. It also seems inconsistent on when it happens; I'll play Tiger Woods or F1 for 2-3 hours and have no problems and then sometimes, like tonight, after about an hour of TW it happened. It also doesn't just happen during games; once after playing for a while I was looking at the PS store before I logged off and it happened there (it also happened before and after 1.6 so it's not something new with that patch.)
I did have the unit in my TV stand with 6" of ventilation all around but it was on a glass shelf above my receiver so the bottom was fairly hot. Now I have moved it off to the side of my stand and set it on its side with the vents pointing up to see if this will keep this from happening. Just wondering if anyone has seen this before. I have had a similar problem when playing my God of War II game on my PS3 I use the HDMI and everytime it goes to a cut scene the picture goes black for a second then comes back on. I believe it is my projector that is slow in acquiring the signal.
I believe this only happens because there is a "break" in the signal. I swapped in my component cables for the ps2 and set it up for 1080i for gaming now I don't ever have the problem. I don't think it is a heat issue I have had my ps3 on for over 30 hours before and played games and movies probably 10-18 of those off and on. |

I believe it is a handshaking issue between HDMI 1.3 and older versions of HDMI (i.e. HDMI 1.1 and 1.2). I don't think Sony can tamper with the HDMI since it is a standardized interface.
Maybe Sony can adjust some portions of the software that talks to the HDMI hardware interface to smooth things out. If they can adjust the delay or signal threshold before the signal temporarily cuts out, I believe that would fix the issue. |

This is one of several reasons I bought a nice set of component cables for my ps3 and have lived happily ever after.

Thanks guys, looks like it was an HDMI handshake problem. It started happening tonight so I turned my receiver off and back on and it went away. It's just strange that everything will work fine for hours at a time then suddenly the handshake problem happens.

Well it turns out it was an overheating problem but it was my reciever not the PS3 and it only happens when passing 1080p. It never actually happened while I was playing TW or F1 but would start happening after I quit them and was at the PS3 options screens/PS3 store or watching 1080p trailers (and why it has never happened on my HD Dish DVR.)
I think it just started happening because I am working from home full time now and listen to the stereo all day before sitting down to watch movies/play PS3 (so the reciever has already been running 8+ hours before I start to play.) Anyway I'm going to move my reciever further away from the exhaust vent on my TV and maybe buy a little fan for the cabinet. |
