Question 1080p

How long will 1080p be considered the best, I'm looking to get a new tv and I was wondering if I should wait or will 1080p be good for awhile?

PLMK

THANKS

1080p is not yet available for HD broadcasts, so you are good for quite a while. Remember, 480i broadcasts are still more common.

1080p is the best only if you have a 1080p source which is only video games and bluray now...1080p is only good if you are at the right viewing distance...the farther away the better 720p is for you...what is your viewing distance and what size of tv are you looking to get?

Not discounting the article posted, but I had only ever heard that in relation to 1080i, not 1080p. Not sure why they lumped it together (overall resolution i guess). I certainly won't claim to know more than the recommendations put forth by SMPTE or the guys who designed THX, but I can notice a difference between Blu-ray (1080p) and sports programing (usually 720p).

I'm trying my damndest to keep this on track As I think that's a interesting article..

So the basic premise is that, as you move further the distance to the screen, the diagonal screen size needs to grow larger (logarithmically) in order for the same amount of detail to be visible. beyond that point, 720p renders the same level of detail as 1080p... sound about right?

My usually viewing distance is about twice the recommended (12' vs 6' for 42"). To me, there is much more to it than edge crispness. I do not have a 120Hz tv yet 1080p definitely has a more realistic and even film-like presentation.

Anyone?

As you move away from you picture, the human eye can't pick up the same detail as it could at 6', it become saturated as they say...the human eye can only pick up so much info and this chart is explaining the viewing distance to get the best picture resolution...so on your 42" tv it is saying that for the maximum resolution for that size is at 6ft and as you move away you aren't seeing the same detail or getting the same resolution as you would at the best picture resolution...

Right... Exactly how I read it... So then how come my experience is that with 1080p there is much more to what I see than edge crispness. I do not have a 120Hz tv yet 1080p definitely has a more realistic and even film-like presentation. I thought maybe some form of expectation/self fulfilling prophecy, but even my wife can tell a difference in quality of what we see... (College hoops were brighter, but movie had much more depth)...

wait...what are you talking about 120Hz and 1080p...you said that twice and you are confusing me...120Hz and 1080p are two totally different things...what do you mean by that?
