Why do you hate "Monsoon Wedding"? I find Mira Nair the least pretentious and actually liked Monsoon Wedding for bringing out the real mood, drama, bickering, humor etc,. in any Indian wedding. It's far from perfect though...

If you are looking for pretentious then you have Deepa Mehta! I can't wait to see the mess she makes of "Midnight Children" but that's another overrated piece of writing to begin with!

I liked Monsoon Wedding also for the new and interesting actors it bought into the limelight. And they were virtually unknown before it - Vijay Raaz, Lillette Dubey, Rajat Kapoor, Tillotama Shome, Randeep Hooda etc.

^Deepa Mehta is the ******* of the universe, I grant you that, but I really had a hard time sitting through Monsoon Wedding. Too many sequences seemed geared around generating cheap shock laughs. Maybe it's a bit harsh to call it one of the worst films I've seen but here's a copy+paste of a review I had put up in 2001 when I saw the movie at the cinema:

Quote:
So far as my own point of view goes Mira was quite at an advantage since the last film of her's that I'd seen was `Comasutra: A Tale of Lewd' after which any effort would have been an improvement. I do not intend to say here that I liked the film, but I certainly could not dislike it as much as that earlier piece. As for the question of the film bagging Venice's Golden Lion, I will say that it was entirely because of a western audience delighting in the exotic-ness of a third-world film interpretation of the Hollywood/British ensemble romantic comedy.
The film shoots itself in the foot at an early stage with its pathetic (although not by audience response standards) attempts at thrill humor (women comparing breast sizes, smart-ass children spying adults naked, an incongruous sequence of a TV debate on censorship where a fat dubbing artiste is called in to recreate the dialogue of a copulation sequence). The plot revolves around a wedding in a rich n' loud Punjabi family whose sundry members include a worried Father-of-the-Bride, his wife, the daughter who's having an affair with a married man, assorted sexually desperate and pedophiliac relatives and the aforementioned smart-ass children. The story moves about in a very predictable way, often painfully so, and at its 120 odd min length asks for too much of your patience. Trimming it down by 45 min wouldn't have improved the quality of the film, but there would have been that less of it to endure. The slapstick element in the form of a romance between the housemaid and the wedding contractor could have been mildly amusing in a film of much better overall quality but like most other elements of this film, it begins to grate. Various models and NRI-recruits display their typical vacuousness and it is left to a handful of seasoned actors to salvage as much of this venture as they can.
So is there any silver lining to this cloud? Weeeeellll, bringing out what has been described alternatively as my soft spot and my patronizing attitude, I'd like to say yes: Naseeruddin Shah as the bride's father makes for a picture of dignity in this unholy pastiche. Although one could not ever count it among his more striking performances, it goes without dispute the film benefits immeasurably from the experience and essential solidity of this thespian. He builds a rapport with the audience bit by bit and uses this intimacy to lend a touching credibility to his dramatic scenes towards the end of the film. Lilette Dubey as his wife lends very good support and it's nice to see a film that features sexual intimacy between middle-ageds without sensationalizing it (although again contrary to audience response). Shefali Chhaya as an ex-victim of the pedophiliac relative is sincere but hampered by utter cliché. One person who seems to have had fun with this film is composer Mychael Danna. The credit titles roll with an amusing blend of typical Punjabi Baaraat and Western March music. Shots of city traffic (while nice to view, wholly unrelated to the film's plot and adding nothing to it) are punctuated with well executed inspirations from Indian classical music. If Danna himself has composed these then he represents the Western equivalent of our Vanraj Bhatia, being able to easily fuse the music of disparate cultures. To reflect its Punjabi ambience though, some brain-chewing songs have been imported from other sources for sequences including a horrifying one where a younger relative dresses up as a veritable street-walker and prances to a ludicrous beat while her elders and assorted suitors beam on (the former proudly and the latter lustfully).
Mira's love for color could have meant well for the look of a wedding film but this doesn't really reflect in the final product except for the irrelevant traffic shots.

Dude!! dont get me wrong but I dont think the question was what are the films u like in entire year. The stress is on the term 'favourites'. I wud be further happy if u cud shortlist it down to max three names only as i reallly take interest in your viewpoints on any film. Think of it as films that will truly hold value for u even after few years from now.

Hollywood - Final Destination 4 - If anyone has seen this they know what I'm talking about, absolutely no storyline whatsoever. Horrible acting, all the actors seemed like Kristen Stewart , no clue whatsoever.

Bollywood - there are a lot of movies.. but the absolute worst would be Chandni Chowk to China.. What a horrible crap it was. Being an Akshay Kumar die hard fan.. I was more disappointed.

"Chandni Chowk to China"
If you've seen Jackie Chan's old film or Stephen Chow's film (especially "Kung-fu Hustle"),
after watching "CC2C", you would like to tear the screen.

Anyway this film failed releasing in China. (fortunately~)

I really liked reading your review, you write better than 95% of the reviewers on commercial portals, no kidding

But from reading your review I felt your expectations from a Mira Nair film where high and you were let down (and that's fair). Kamasutra ought to be striked off from her repertoire, for that matter most big budget attempts by MN ought to be!

My comment to your original post was "hate" is a strong word for a film like MW. The film was made in 2001 and the attempts at humor - the dubbing artist, the talk show, women comparing breast sizes etc. - were not done before really so was interesting. The very premise of a loud punjabi family and their workings that seem terribly irritating now, didn't seem so forced then. And the film, despite dealing with every topic under the sun, had a easy, laid-back feel to it. People spoke English like people speak it in Delhi and not as homogenized as Hollywood productions make it!

And as you pointed out, Mychael Danna's soundtrack/BG score is interesting and eclectic. I have this on CD and listen to it ever so often. Had it not been for this soundtrack, I would have never known the wonderful Farida Khanum.

As you can see, my takeaway from the film is very positive for a number of reasons. But to each our own.... Cheers

Default Why this topic?

This is an interesting topic but the OP appears to have an affinity to start topics on any random thought that goes thru his mind, even if it's not relevant to the forum! I thought I also saw a post on "Your Favorite Song" and "The Best Cable Provider in India" from the OP

Srinivasa - let's not make this a "General Lounge" boss. A lot of Blu Ray topics lead to interesting debates on the merits of cinema and different perspectives. And I think that's fair. But let's not start topics that are irrelevant to the purpose of this forum.
I am afraid you may start topics like "your favorite soap/shampoo" next and before you know it this forum will be heavily policed by the powers that be!

Cheers

This topic is relevant to the forum as it deals with movies.
"A lot of Blu Ray topics lead to interesting debates on the merits of cinema and different perspectives." - That is what this thread is for. If those discussions are done in the 'blu-ray' threads, then it is off topic.

The best DigitalTV service thread was useful as I had a decision to make and the input provided here was incredibly useful. There are any active topics or discussions here anyway. 90% of the posts deal with complaining about Indian transfers and posting the latest blu-ray received. Whenever a thread comes up that incites discussion, please don't respond by saying 'why this thread?' .
There are currently 4 threads in this section that deal with The Dark Knight. That is a waste of space, not this. A don't see how talking about movies is going to lead to 'a discussion about shampoo'. If you don't want to post, then don't. Cut the mockery.

CC2C was the worst movie ever. I wonder if they ever realise what crap they making when they were filming!! And Warner-Bros was also onboard.

All I am saying is don't make this a "general forum". A discussion on Blu-Ray (the format) is not necessarily the space for a discussion on cinema. 90% of the posts that deal with complaining of a transfer may seem like whining but again it's relevant to the forums purpose. Right?

There are other sections on this portal for that discussion and many of us here participate there too. And like I said before, this topic is definitely interesting and as you can see I have participated in it too. Just questioning the purpose of it here.

>>The best DigitalTV service thread was useful as I had a decision to make and the input provided here was incredibly useful.<<
Good for you but do you really see the purpose of this forum to serve your decision making process in choosing cable providers? I don't. So suggested you start those topics elsewhere. The "shampoo" remark was a joke but not a far-fetched thought if others start buying into the idea of this being a general purpose forum

Not really because I feel that Mira never fulfilled the potential she demonstrated with Salaam Bombay! Mississippi Masala had decent moments but was quite uneven and the movies after that have been essentially dull. But yes, since this movie had a positive hype around it (including from people I know and trust) I grant that I perhaps had high expectations. and yes, hate may be too strong a word. But I do know that several moments in the film that I mentioned in the review really annoyed me.

I saw the film in 2001 in the cinemas and my review was written at that time, so no, this doesn't hold water. Besides, Yash Chopra's DDLJ is a prime example of the workings of loud annoying Punjabi families before this one .

Me too, I was totally blown away by that song, too bad it was used for a forgettable car sex sequence.

Btw have you ever seen this Deepa Mehta film called Bollywood-Hollywood? Now that was a film that made me want to murder people. I even got into an argument with an NRI woman at the cinema because I was literally swearing at the screen

How about this,
I don't hate "Raajneeti" (because I apprehend what Prakash Jha want to say)
But the ending made me upset
[Show spoiler]why Katrina was chosen the head of the party. She doesn't have any political stance, experience... et al.
In a nutshell, she don't have any qualification.
But similar situation happen in some countries. I don't know (that is) whether Jha's intention or not, but I was very upset, sigh, and said...
"What the hell?"
