This is good news for HD-DVD owners. They will be able to purchase HD-DVD discs at a cost of $5 cheaper since combo discs appear to be getting phased out by Universal.
The other thing I like about this is Universal and the movie industry will now be able to see how many true HDTV owners are purchasing discs. The problem with combo’s is some consumers that only own DVD players were purchasing combo discs and making it appear the HD-DVD format was more popular then it really is. Some uneducated consumers sometimes purchase HD-DVD discs and think that they will get HDTV quality in there standard DVD player. ** Retail Stores are most likely going to see people try and return a HD-DVD disc now with comments like “It would not play in my DVD player, it should have since it says the words DVD on it.”. BLU-RAY has less a problem with this since no where on the package does it say the words “DVD”. BLU-RAY equals less consumer confusion. http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Universal/Combo_Discs/Disc_Announcements/Universal_Goes_Non-Combo_with_Army_of_Darkness,__Unleashed_Reissues/553 |

They are doing this not only because the end consumer is confusing between dvd-HD-DVD combo and return them back but it is true too on the other side lowering $5 will be more affordable for customers to buy HDDVD
Just simple as it is Because Universal are loosing money everyday backing HD-DVD |

Maybe Microsoft and Universal are best friends. The HD-DVD camp might be able to convince Universal to stay exclusive for years.
There is the possibility that Universal will be able to release more movies faster by not going combo route. The $5 cheaper price on movies is also a benefit. The negative thing about not having combo discs is less discs might be sold. Here is a theoretical possible customer complaint at the return line at a retail store, “I have been purchasing these HD-DVD titles for several months and using them in my DVD player, now for some reason I can not play these new releases in my DVD player and I have exchanged the HD-DVD movie already 3 times now.” Store manger theoretical comments “You need to purchase a new Toshiba HD-DVD player in order to play the discs since all the new HD-DVD Universal discs only work in HD-DVD players. Maybe Toshiba will be able to sell more HD-DVD players since combo discs are going away. |

To me, and maybe this is wishful thinking, this seems like a good sign that maybe Universal is starting the process of ramping down on HD-DVD. If you think something is not going to be around for awhile you start detaching it from something that will be around for awhile. DVD will be around for awhile for all those people who don't have HD TV so now they are going back to seperating the two.

I agree w/ Titan. Also, I think the combo was to boost sales, since they could easily spin a combo sale as an HD-DVD sale. All the combo did, however, was make HD-DVD owners pay $5 more, because I don't think many people w/ just a DVD player want to pay $15 more for a disc they can only use half of, seeing as how spending just $5 more gets them another movie.

If Universal was smart they would make a double sided HD-DVD disc and place the extra’s on the other side of the disc. Then if they were super intelligent Universal would release on BLU-RAY and end the format war and at the same time make more money since one format equals several millions of consumers buying one format.
