Default 5.1 PCM on the PS3?

Hey there- I am about to purchase a PS3 and am wondering, because my reciever doesn't have and HDMI input, is there any other way to achieve 5.1 PCM via someplace else? I've been looking around for a cable that will have the multi-out but no luck. Does one exist, if not, is there one planned, do you think one will be released? Thanks

Unlikely, as it requires splitting the HDMI signal to audio and video. To get a really good sound, the device needs to have at least 5.1 digital-audio converters (DACs) and pass that along. DACs are not cheap.

If you've got a good 5.1 setup already, it'll be cheaper to buy a new HDMI receiver with Dolby TrueHD and DTS HDMA.

The PS3's Multi A/V output jack allows at best component video output and 2 channel analog output. So at best, you'd have 2 channel uncompressed audio. The Multi A/V output is identical to that found on the PS2 and PS1, so I don't think it's design will ever allow discrete 5.1 channel audio outputs via RCA plugs.

I'd love to have 5.1 analog output from my PS3 too, so I wouldn't have to upgrade my Yamaha receiver. Unfortunately, I don't think it's a possibility.

Theres no need to buy a receiver that decodes TrueHD or DTSMA as the PS3 doesnt bitstream.

Back to the OP, yeah you're better off getting a receiver that can handle PCM.

with the prices of the some receivers being so cheap, might as well get one with the decoding in it. ps3 cant decode dts ma but im going to get one of the new sony players that are coming so it can bitstream to my 705.

This is true however if one is to be forward thinking and assume that the PS3 won't be the last BD player that one purchases, buying a receiver that can handle TrueHD and DTS HDMA decoding would be very prudent. I bet most players from now will AT LEAST bitstream the audio to receivers via HDMI.

Another reason to get a full-fledged (for now) receivers is that while some older receivers can handle multichannel audio input via HDMI, it might not be able to handle 1080p/1080p24 video passthrough that the PS3 can do. Again, it would be forward thinking to get the new receivers because one's current 1080i HDTV would probably not be the last HDTV one buys. The prices of 1080p HDTVs are falling each year.

Yes. It is always a good idea to look beyond PS3 when you are committing to a new purchase such as an AVR. Although current PS3 is not capable of bit streaming, your next upgrade PS or some other box (perhaps due to a too expensive out of warranty repair), may not have this restriction. So one should look for the best value for money, with full audio and video handling capability.

By the way I wish to note that both PS2 and PS3s are well build like tanks. We have a 5 year old PS2 performing same as when it was new. It is amazing that it has survived so long in the way that children abuse it.

So I wish to edit above post to say "perhaps due to an unlikely event of too expensive out of warranty repair".

I felt it is unfair for the PS3 to keep the above post as it is.
