Default Do you buy dramas and comedies in blu-ray?

Most of the movies I watch are 1930-1970 German, Italian, and French films. Yes, pretentious, I know. Blu-Ray? Not a factor on those. I think these movies just make me used to the lower resolution and I'm just fine with regular DVDs.

I also watch a lot of modern, dialogue comedies and some dramas. When I can buy Talladega Nights for under $5, I just can't justify the purchase of a Blu-Ray for $20 (on sale) to $30. Blade Runner on Blu-Ray? Yes. Little Miss Sunshine? No.

Right now regular DVDs are just too good a bargain, and my HD-A3 (that I bought on clearance and the discs practically paid for the player) upscales them very well.

ps - the HD exclusive library needs to come out with the quickness on Blu. The HD library was infinitely better for a person like me, but now I want those movies forever on Blu!

They're just fine because there aren't any explosions in The Third Man...

On a movie like Transformers, being on HD/Blu is of upmost importance because the script is awful but the pretty robots can make it fun. Action movies make it worthwhile for me, but I can't justify the cost for dramas and comedies.

I still appreciate the three dimensionality of high def media even if the source material isn't action. The colors look better, the faces are better defined and have a more natural color and the soundtracks can feel free to roam with all the extra bandwith.

You're kidding right? The Third Man would look fantastic in 1080p. The various degrees of black that could come out in that movie alone would be worth it.

Do I buy dramas and comedies in blu-ray?

In the immortal words of Taffey Lewis in Blade Runner, "all the time, pal!"

I can assure you, Casablanca in 1080p B&W is a joy to see.

I just can't understand where this "dramas and comedies aren't worthy of Blu-Ray" mentality comes from.

I haven't had a chance to purchase any older movies on Blu-ray yet, but some of the older movies on HDNet Movies are absolutely startling. I mean even if I'm not interested in the movie flipping past it... I have to go back and watch it for a few minutes... and that's in 1080i on a crappy cable system.

Blu is pretty much all I buy these days, unless it's something like a stand-up show, or UFC/Pride FC.

To answer your question: It depends on what drama and what comedy!

I stopped buying that many DVDs a couple of years ago in anticipation of HDM, and besides the occasional TV series set (and with the exception of two sets, all pre-HDTV series) and the occasional gift, I've managed to stop buying DVD altogether... which is not to say that I've stopped watching DVD... I've just started borrowing copies from friends when there's a movie I want to see that is not available on Blu-ray... or I don't want to buy it. The majority of the time, I have that option... the rest of the time I just hope it comes to Blu-ray or DirecTV (freeview) soon enough.

If it's a movie I'm really interested in, I'll buy it on Blu-ray... or make plans to buy it soon. For instance, upcoming comedies and dramas that I'm planning on getting on Blu-ray include "Enchanted", "Alvin And The Chipmunks", "Juno", "27 Dresses", "P.S. I Love You", "The Shawshank Redemption". While I can't speak for the PQ on any of these releases (although "Enchanted" has been getting rave reviews), I can speak for the PQ on some dramas... "A Few Good Men" for instance looks WONDERFUL! While I've heard bad things about the film, and I haven't sat down to watch it, "License To Wed" is quite a noticeable upgrade from the DVD as well...

As far as HD DVD's catalog goes, I am looking forward to multiple exclusives coming to Blu-ray, but I've felt more interest in the Blu-ray catalog than I ever did with HD DVD's...

~Alan

You should have seen "Frankie And Johnny" (1966) on MGM-HD last week!

I only buy bd's, no point in buying into old technology when the new is in my living room.
