Default Blu-ray vs SD DVD

Hello everyone, I was wondering if people here could offer me advice? I've got a lot of "old fashioned dvds" and am trying to decide if I should replace many of my movies with Blu-Ray, or if I should just start buying blu for the future. I have a Panasonic DMP-BD30K Blu Ray player, and the upconverting of movies seems pretty good... Any thoughts or suggestions? I'd rather not go spending a lot of $$ to replace my movies unless I have to. Thanks!

For starters make all of your NEW purchases in Blu-ray. In addition, I would consider replacing your favorite movies.

Only you can really decide whether or not it is worth it to replace your DVDs with Blu-rays. In fact it is quite likely that most of your movies are not even available on Blu-ray yet. I myself have quit watching DVDs except for the select few that I couldn't bare to part with, but I will replace them in a second if they are offered on Blu-ray.

Suncoast buys back DVDs and you can get more credit there by trading them in. Just a suggestion.

Honestly it depends on the quality of the Bluray movie....

Not all Bluray movies are truly worth the price and not all of them are as good looking or sound as great as they could/should.

Therefore you need to be careful, read the views, and come to your own judgment about whether its worth the upgrade.

replace them all....upconverting can never match Blu-ray....I replaced everything I owned....and now I own more Blu than I ever did on dvd....its a little expensive esp spending all that money on dvd, but if you have it to spend, I would suggest replacing....just think, you wont really have to replace them again....

Well for me, all new releases are absolutely purchased on BD. I have not purchased any regular DVD's in the past 2 years. Now I own over 2000 regular DVDs, and i have replaced alot, but for me, it has to be a movie im going to watch more than once. So movies like the matrix trilogy, star wars, die hard, etc get replaced automatically. Other movies like some dramas or comedies that i MAY watch once or who knows maybe not, i wont replace unless it gets dirt cheap. A good example would be a comedy like Freddy Got Fingered. ( yes i know most people dont like it, but i do). Would I replace it for $20, nope. But if I saw it for like say $7, yeah id spring for it. Now some movies I like, and the BD hasnt been the quality id want. An example would be xXx. I like the movie alot and i have the superbit version of it. The BD imho simply isnt a huge upgrade in PQ. It was a very early release and will most likely be re-released again in the future. Ill spring for that one when it gets re-released.
Now I also have to replace some of the HDDVDs I own ( yes i know this makes me on par with the anti-christ for owning some, but I love movies and buy everything, and it was out here in the US first). Ill upgrade certain ones if they make it better on BD. If its just the same encode, ill stick with my HD DVD until my player dies, or if I find the movie on BD cheap.

I'm done with buying any movies on DVD. It's just a waste of money. I have a big, new 52" HDTV and a PS3 that can play BDs in all their glory. Why would I even need to be remotely interested in buying any new discs on DVD?

Any new movie releases that I want to buy are getting bought on Blu-ray exclusively. The only way I'm buying something on DVD is if that title is exclusively in DVD format and was shot on video in NTSC format.

I'm replacing my favorite movies on DVD with Blu-ray versions when such BDs become available (and my budget allows for the replacement).

Out of my existing DVD collection, I'll probably get rid of most of those discs through various means (selling them, trading them for credit, giving some away to friends, etc.) I'll get rid of some of those discs as they get replaced with BD versions. There are other DVDs in my collection I impulse bought and don't plan to replace with any upgraded versions. Those will disappear in the best possible manner I can manage (hopefully sold, but given away if push comes to shove).

Don't replace automatically everything. Many new HD transferts have problems the original DVDs didn't have. Say, the 007 series comes to Blu, it would be crazy to buy Goldeneye, which is zoomboxed, or A view to a Kill, also zoomboxed, unless they fix these problems for the upcoming BR, much better would be to watch the old 2000 SD versions. They feature the right image format.
Also movies like The Hunt for Red October feature DTS track on the DVD, but not on the HD which is DD. As the PQ is a marginal improvement in HD (same master used), you might stick to your old DVD and upconvert it.
I view SD as an alternative, in cases the HD transfert is botched or the sound lacks in quality. Also many movies will not be released on BR within the next two years at least, if not five. I doubt Ridley Scott Duellists will come to SD in two months. So SD is still an alternative.

I say don't get rid of you collection completely, always check BR availability and quality first, you might also shave a lot out of your collection by just watching as many discs as you can upconverted, and selling off all those who sucks on your display, chances are the BR will not be worst !

Unfair! Biased!

How come the poll didn't have the following selection?

"No way am I going to replace my DvDs! They're much better quality than any BD version!"

...

I would only consider "upgrading" a handful of titles tops.

If you have the DVD already, you've probably already watched the title some number of times. Unless it's something really special, it's probably just cheaper to rent if you want to view again in HD.

Something bigger and better than Blu Ray will also come along in a decade or so, so there's also not much point in continually re-freshing an entire library of titles.

Blu-Ray is taking over my collection. I've been buying them like a fiend. My goal is to have to have more Blu's by the end of next year than to have SD-DVD's. I'm probably going to end up trading or selling ones that I replace.
