Default PS3 Snippet Here...

This link talks about PSP pricing and sales, but I saw that it also refers to PS3 consoles sold. Not good news that XBOX 360 outsold PS3 by over 100,000...if PS3 is going to 'catch-up' it won't do so because of sales in USA.

The 360 has a year's headstart over the PS3.

This is a pesky fact that seems can't be repeated enough for all this doom 'n' gloom going about.

That is what I'm trying to point out here - they have a year head start, so shouldn't they be selling less consoles per month that the hot new product, PS3?

No 'doom and gloom' here - just facts. We use this same argument to show why Blu-Ray is going to kill HD-DVD - outselling 2:1 per month and so forth. We can't have it both ways.

If you remember, HDDVD also had a head start on BluRay and now BluRay is the leader. The 360, with a much larger head start, is obviously going to be the leader both now and in the near future. I say this because there are some gamers out there that are strictly that: gamers. They don't necessarily care about BluRay solely because the price difference (Most people look at the price tag alone, not taking into account the superiority of the PS3 and the fact that the 360 will cost much more in the long run). The PS3 will become the leader, I believe, as the year progresses and once people realize how good it is and that it's really not that expensive, especially with the 360 Elite coming out.

I think the PS/3 was made available in bigger quantity earlier, so that that the initial early adopter crowd was satiated. And that it will be the games that will drive the sales going forward.

From a games console war perspective the PS/3 numbers are a disappointing. Although, I'd argue the Wii has taken the wind out of both the next-gen, and shown that gameplay can top the specs.

The original Microsoft estimates were to ship 15 million units by the end of March. They cut that back to 12 million in January. With the worldwide Xbox 360 sales still under 10 million, it may end up being cut back further. In the meantime, the Wii has reached 6.5 million sales, and is on pace to blow past the Xbox 360 in 3-4 months (what will Xbox fans think about that?).

As for the Blu-ray aspects, the PS/3 is still selling LOTS of units, and at nominal BD adoption rates it means the PS/3 alone is adding 2x as many users per month as HD DVD. Even with "lousy" sales. And if games aren't hugely enticing, that actually HELPS movie adoption rates.

Huge PS/3 games -> Lower BD usage % + more PS/3 unit sales -> More overall BD usage

No huge PS/3 games -> Higher BD usage % -> More overall BD usage

It's sort of a no lose situation for Blu-ray. Watch out for Xmas if the $100 price cut comes through.

^^ This is all true.

From strictly a gaming console standpoint, I feel like I'm seeing the usual "cycle of life" happening here for all concerned.

If you look at it objectively, the PS3 numbers are not disappointing. They have outsold the 360 for the same time period from their launch, meaning the PS3 has sold more units in its four months than the 360 did in its first four months. In addition, the PS3 has sold better than the PS2 did during their launch weekends. There are now over 200 million PS2's in the world so that's quite a big Sony base for people to eventually jump to the PS3.

^^what he said...

the 360 is outselling PS3 right now because they CURRENTLY have a better game selection...

this time last year 360's were collecting dust in local stores here in Philadelphia......now that they have Gears (the reason I temporarily owned a 360) and a few other titles worth buying....

but the 360 shot it's load....and the PS3 gets to say "...my turn"...in a few months....and the atomic bomb will be next year with MGS4 and I think one of them FF games are coming out...

As I've said before, all the ps3 needs to do in order to be successful is; convince the PS user base the PS3 deserves to succeed the PS2/PS1. If they can sell ps3's to that clump of people or even half of those people, nothing the 360 can do will hurt it. If the 360 sells twice what the xbox did, it will have sold just under 50 million. If the ps3 loses half it's ps2 user base, it will have sold 60 million. So, in essence, the PS3 just needs to beat the PS2.

Guess what? It's doing better at this point in it's life, than the PS2 did.

200 million PS2s? I thought it was closer to 120 million.

If you compare the numbers though from last year at this time for the 360 against this year for the PS3 I bet the 360 outsold it...

I'd buy the PS3 if only it supports 1080/24p...

Actually no. It's common knowledge that the PS3 has out sold the 360 when comparing them at this point in time of their respective lives. Simply look at the numbers in the UK, 70k 360's vs 165k PS3's upon release?!?! That's just one example, but should give you a little insight. Of course the Xbox had supply issues, so we will never know. But as far as cold hard numbers go, the 360 did not out sell the PS3 like you claimed.

So much for your bet.

Funny that you hold the PS3 to higher standard (1080p/24) than your 360. Are you implying you'd only use it for bd?

^^ This is about 10 months into the PS3's life.

Slowly, we're already seeing a slow build up to the likes of that even now.

I know this much: It's going to be a heck of a Christmas season for the PS3 and Blu-Ray in general.

Eventually we will end up with 3..one for the living room, a dedicated media room and upstairs for the kids as well. A second one this xmas for sure and another one further down the road when the SXRD eventually gets switched out and LCD's have dropped in price.

How many of those 360 sales were because their first 360 died?
