Cloverfield was supposed to be full(HD-DVD HDi) featured "Collector's Edition' 2 HD-DVD set.Paramount had a full staff work for a month straight to get all the extras and HD-DVD content ready for the HD-DVD/DVD release(to the point that it WAS finished). Now that, that has been scrapped, Paramount is "RUSHING" a BARE BONES BlueRay edition into production to be released with the single and double disc edition dvd sets.

They ought to just take their time with the BR edition and translate what they can from the HD-DVD version, or better yet, just go ahead a produce the 2 disc HD-DVD version like they should have in the first place.

Insiders have commented that, depending on the level of re-mastering (if any) that needs to be done, it can take a few weeks for the mastering/encoding process (turning the master print into a Blu-ray-worthy encode) and then a few months lead-time on the order to have the discs pressed and the cover art printed.

The process is longer if the master print needs extensive retouching (Armageddon's was damaged in a fire, for example), or if the director is highly involved (Michael Bay, ahem), and how many extra/bonus features are included.

Last I heard, it's taking studios anywhere from 1-2 months from the time they place the order for duplication until the title is available for retail.

I'd prefer that they release it as soon as possible (without the extras if necessary) and the ones that want extras can just wait for a special edition. That probably sounds a little cold but imo, it doesn't seem fair for a large number of people having to wait for something that they mostly don't care about. So, release a barebones blu-ray as soon as possible for those not interested in extras and release a special edition later on that has everything. I don't know how it all works though so that might not be feasible. It would seem to split the focus of the people working on the titles among several titles instead of releasing a title and then moving on to the next one. Guess I'll have to work on my patience.

I think its important for the director to justify extras. Alot of it is crap.

Actually, it is good if they can get BD out in 1 to 2 months.

Authoring involves many steps that take time which include graphics design for menus, motion menus if any, transfer, down conversion (from DI), chapter points selection and creation, disk printing, cover printing. These are in addition to retouching, extra editing and development of special features. This is not a small job.

I seriously could care less about Paramount anymore, sure I'd love some of their films on BD, but I'm just so sick of them not supporting BD & leaving us to begin with, their only hurting themselves!! yeah we want movies but their losing the sales, & respect. When we finally get some dates then cool but I wouldn't expect any within the next 2-3 years!!!(a lil exaggeration but you get the point)

I haven't heard anything about the BD release of Cloverfield. It will probably take a while, after Paramount pulls its head out of its butt and gets back to work on Blu.

We have heard some rumors that the Blu-Ray release might be barebones though. Since there isn't time to reincode all the extras that were planned for the HD-DVD version for Blu-Ray. So they either release barebones or delay the release. Given they haven't even announced the release at all yet, who knows.

You know...

Up until this format thing, I never cared who put out a film... if I liked it, I liked it. When movie studios dont support a format that I have, I get kind of irritated though. It is just business, and I am not being rational, but thats how I feel about these punks.

That's why there is no street date for the BD, because it sucks!
