Default Sony 70" XBR2

I'm getting "real close now" to getting one of these; anyone have any pros or cons to throw out? Particularly for those of you who have it and have wanted regular anime DVDs on it...

My parents have this set. I will be picking up a 60" when I move, only because I don't have room for the 70. It's great, and I have it tweaked as accurately as I think I can make it without going for a full pro cal. I love the Samsung DLP's, but I am just too sensitive to rainbows, and the 'rents also had a DLP light engine die on their Samsung.

That is definately the XBR3 set; but as much as I would like a 70", I would not spend 25k+ for it. That is why I got the 52" XBR3, it is amazing! Got it for about 3.5k (with shipping; no tax); does not get any better. It is light; the contrast is simply WOW!

The only con I can think of after having this set since December is that it doesn't have HDMI 1.3.

It's been amazing otherwise!

P.S. It's heavy!

Default Sony KDS-R70XBR2

I had a Samsung DLP HL-R6768W for about a year and a half and had a couple of issues with it, one of which Samsung was never able to fix. I eventually swapped it out for the Sony KDS-R70XBR2. The TV is pretty amazing and I'm extremely happy with it. It is one of the most configurable TV's out there based on reviews that I've read and my own comparison with the Samsung.

An extra lamp is provided which is worth noting since the lamps are about $350. Another important technical feature is that it has three 1080p HDMI connections. I don't know every TV out there, but I haven't seen others with three. The Samsung had two and was advertised as 1080p, but what wasn't stated is that it was only 1080p through the VGA port and the HDMI connections were 1080i.

The sound is more robust (deeper bass) than other TV's I've checked out and the picture is absolutely beautiful. I haven't watched Anime, but from the various types of movies I have watched, I would think that Anime would look awesome.

Standard DVD's look excellent and if you have a strong cable signal, standard def TV looks good as well.

The picture on the Samsung that I had was very good and I was somewhat disappointed when I got rid of it (due to the issue I had which was a manufacturing problem with the chip in that model). Although I had researched the Sony and checked it out in a few stores, I wasn't sure if I was going to be as happy with the picture but I can say for sure that the picture is simply awesome.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Last year I was very close to purchasing the Sony KDS-R70XBR2. The model list price is only $5999.99. This is a great price since the model before it cost $13,000 and did not have a 1080P input. The 2006 model 70 inch is $7,000 cheaper and has a 1080P input. Great bargain.

This set can be purchase for totally delivered price over the Internet for around $4,000.

The two reasons I decided to wait to purchase the Sony KDS-R70XBR2 are
  • This is a 60HZ only display and I am hoping that some time in the future, maybe as soon as Sep 2007 or Sep 2008 Sony will have a 1080P/24 SXRD 70 inch that refreshes 24FPS material at 96HZ or 120HZ.
  • Some time this year or next year we might see TV’s with built in two way QAM tuners with support for the M cable card (VOD and PPV). Currently all the consumer products on the market that have cable cards only have support for the S cable card with one way QAM tuners.

For those of you saying it is the XBR3 set, you are wrong, it is the XBR2. There is no such thing as a 70"XBR3, unless you are talking about the new LCD for $33k

I think the KDSR70XBR2 is the best TV for the money on the market. I think it looks better than 95% of the sets out there. I would have picked it up, if I had the space.

I have the 60". Only difference is the screen size and no detachable speakers. I would have preferred the 70" but was intentionally trying to go a little smaller. The only downside is it's not HDMI 1.3, but I don't really consider that a deal-breaker. Especially, when you consider the price. IMHO, it's one of the best displays I've ever seen.

The funny thing is the 60" version only has about 2" less width than the 70" version with the speakers detached. That's what made me go for the 70".

Default Excellent review on Sony KDS-R70XBR2 in May 2007 Widescreen review

In the May 2007 issue of Widescreen Review starting on page 22 is an excellent review of the Sony KDS-R70XBR2. Over the last 3 years this technology has really improved while at the same time prices have fallen. The original Sony SXRD front projector cost $33,000 with the 1080P upgrade and $30,000 with standard 1080I input. Two years ago the 70 inch QUALIA SXRD from Sony cost $13,000 with only a 1080I input. This 2006 model which is only $6000 is better quality then the $13,000 model when using the 1080P/60 input.

Widescreen review quote
“Sony’s latest SXRD model, the fully integrated HDTV KDS-R70XBR2, offers a 70-inch picture as good or better than the 2004 model I covered, at less than half the price.”
