great sound compared to what?
OP is upgrading from a HTIB...and it sounds like he's attempting to make a worthy investment into higher end speakers.

FWIW, I worked for a little over a year in a Magnolia Home Theater department at Best Buy, and got to listen to nearly every speaker they sold there quite frequently. My favorite speakers overall were the Vienna Accoustic Bachs, but I think the best ones for movies were the Definitive Technologies ones they carried. Great presence, nice clarity, the built in subs on the towers were great too. If you have a Magnolia Best Buy near you give them a listen. I'd probably go with a Denon recceiver myself, I haven't listened to any of their '08 models, but I thought the 07's sounded quite good, though I also heard nice sound out of the Pioneer Elie and Yamaha pieces as well.

So much great input. I think that I have a lot of research and listening to do in the next coming months. You guys have put out a lot of options that I never new I had. The hard part will be trying to find some places to listen to all these speakers. Around me I just have (to my knowledge) a Circuit City, Tweeter and Best Buy Magnolia Home Theater. Is there any other stores around MA & NH that anyone knows about that I am over-looking that would be worth a trip? Thank again for all the great information everyone.

I am on Vacation in NH right now.. I just went to a place today called Cinemaesque.. THey have 2 stores.. The main one is in Conway I believe the guy said..

You could try contacting them..

The aperion speakers are an in home audition only... Arguably as it should be.

That's your first problem....... most stuff you're gonna want to audition can't be found in those types of stores, but in Home-theater-specialty stores..... Look up Martin Logan, or B&W or Tannoy, or Krell, or Rotel, or even Apogee and then go to "locate a dealer" and find what stores pop up around your zip code...... you may not be in the market for anything Krell makes, but if you find a mom/pop store that is authorized to sell Krell, they probably have other goodies too. Most "authorized" dealers carry 5 or 6 various brands of speakers, and a handful of component brands.

good luck.

How ironic! You own the same speakers!

I think OP should audition PSB Speakers.... talk about some great sounding, highly acclaimed works of art!!

I'll leave you in suspense of what my 7.1 set-up is comprised of.

i heard Aperion is nice though

I have owned Onkyo separates, old 80's gear was blown away by the sound. I just read a forum here the other day about onkyo, and think they mentioned yamaha receivers having some issue with dts ma playback. do a forum search. Crackinheads might have seen this but I'm not sure. I currently have a denon avr-3800 and love it I will be upgrading to the
avr-3808ci or the avr-4308ci this year.

unfortunately onkyo and yamaha reached into the dts decoder ic grab bag and pulled out the buggy version... seems dts is reworking the encoding software for the discs to play nice with it... time will tell.

Maybe I baught them not knowing what to expect and after I got them and heard them, I kept them. They sound great that is why for not big money.. Hard to find a speaker better than the Aperion in their price range.

Hey guys I ended picking up the Onkyo 705 at Circuit City for $430 it was an open box item (the store display) and I had a 10% off coupon. I have yet to play around with it but with my budget I figured it would be better to save some money on the reciever and spend more towards the speakers. I still feel a little worried purchasing an open box item but I do have 30 days to get a full refund if i see fit. I thought it was a good price for the 705 but my question is, is there anything I should be looking for since it was used or is it a bad idea to purchase it like that regardless. Thanks again guys your the best!

It does not run hot at all it has been on for a couple hours now and I am def enjoying it. Hard to tell if the fans are running or not but I am assuming they are because it isnt hot. Anything else I should be looking for?
