ok so i have a ps3,hdtv,receiver, 2 hdmi cords, and 2 floor speakers (getting the surround soon)
help me hook it up right so the sound will come out of my floor speakers and not my tv. I know basics of home theater but still new. if people could write walkthroughs for me it would be nice. I have 3 hdmi inputs on my tv 2 hdmi inputs on my receiver and 1 hdmi out thx |

HHHHhhhmmm ...
That is a pretty loaded request, but I can try to give you an overview. I normally deal with the speakers first. I place all the speakers where I want them, then run wire from where the receiver is going to be to each speaker. I have a 7.1 system, so that is wiring from seven speakers to the receiver, then one much bigger wire from the subwoofer to the receiver. After that is in place, I run HDMI out from my PS3 to the HDMI In on the receiver. I also have my Wii running component cables to my receiver. I then run one HDMI cable out from my receiver to the HDMI In on my TV. If you have any Sat/Cable equipment, you can run them via HDMI In to your receiver as well. I pretty much have all cords running to my receiver, then one HDMI cord to the TV. The worst part is about to happen, you have to mess with all your stuff until it works. I start with the TV first, see if audio and sound work. The Wii is next. You always have to assign each device to something on the receiver. For example, I have my PS3 set to DVD and my Wii set to Game. So when I turn on my receiver, I press DVD on the receiver remote if I want to use the PS3 and I press Game on the remote if I want to play the Wii. I have an Onkyo 605, so in the setup on the 605, I had to select each HDMI input and set the one output to the TV. None of the connections worked until I did that. I also had to set the PS3 to output audio and video via HDMI with PCM. I had to set the TV to recognize the receiver as an input, so when I watch the TV, I either select TV to watch stuff coming in from the cable cord direct to my TV, or I select Receiver, and it will let me see what is coming through the HDMI from the receiver. I also test the speakers to make sure they all work. I have a NIN: BSYIT Blu-Ray I use for this, since it has a speaker setup option that tests all the main speakers (5.1). I also run the test that is on the Onkyo to see if the remaining 2 speakers work (7.1) for good measure. Many music or major release DVDs also have this feature (like Star Wars). That is a pretty vague overview, but hopefully it will help put the big picture in perspective. Every receiver and TV is different, so you end up having to mess with them for an hour or two before everything gets up and running correctly. Good luck. |

unfortunately your receiver is a "passthrough" system...which means it only passes video and does not accept HDMI audio. You my friend, will have to use an optical cable and set the ps3 to bitstream. Connect the HDMI from PS3 to your TV, and an optical cable from the PS3 to your receiver. On your PS3 make sure you set: Settings - Sound Settings - Audio Output Settings - Digital Out (Optical) then... Settings - BD/DVD Settings - BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital) - Bitstream and on your receiver just designate the optical intput. Last edited by crackinhedz; 10-11-2007 at 02:43 AM. |

Besides, why offer the guy a receiver with HDMI v1.2 when v1.3 is the future? Thats like talking somebody into a first gen Blu-ray player after Profile 2.0 comes out. Last edited by Footloose301; 10-11-2007 at 01:40 PM. |

![]() HDMIv1.3 is the future? How future? show me some deep color Bluray titles. ![]() Exactly. The OP has a Sharp LC-46D82U (HDMI v1.2)...what advantage would a 1.3 receiver have for him? Nothing. The PS3 can only send Lossless audio via PCM anyways. now the question is, do you want the BurrBrown DAC's and 5.1 into 7.1 matrix ability? or the HDMI v1.3?? ![]() |

The key words in my posts were "cost" and "future". 1. Cost- Self explanatory 2. Future- Onkyo has more room for expansion. What if the OP wants to upgrade his tv? What happens then? Or if he gets a different Blu-ray player? Its like when movies started becoming 7.1ch and people only had 5.1ch receivers. They had to buy new receivers. The matrixing is not that important. 5.1ch PCM sounds great as is and with both receiver he stills has 7.1ch audio. I don't know about you but I like to buy things once. I don't want to have to buy a new receiver + tv when new technology arrives. The PS3 is ready with HDMI v1.3, why not match it? The OP is going to be seriously limited when he upgrades his tv or something changes. And since neither of us are going to agree because we're both stating opinions, the OP will have to choose himself. Nonetheless he'll be happy with either receiver. |

Ladies & Gentlemen, I have a related question. I remember being told that if you want the best video signal possible, you should hook your dvd player/PS3 directly to your television rather than go through your receiver because the more obstacles you introduce along the way, the more possible signal degradation. Of course, you could then hook the PS3 audio to the receiver for surround.
Is this true? And if it is true, would the naked eye notice the difference? |
