Default Subwoofer settings

I have a Velodyne DPS sub and am not sure where to set it's low pass crossover. It goes from 40-120hz or Direct. Also, my Onkyo 605 has the LPF of LFE set at 100hz. Any ideas?

My Denon AVR is set at 80hz so I simply set my sub at 80hz to match. I believe that 80hz for crossover is somewhat of a standard for most setups. The idea of setting the two to match (AVR and sub) just seem to be logical for me, but if someone has any different ideas I would like to know.

I actually was toying with my phase (180 or 0) the other day. I have kept it on 180 but really don't 100% understand the settings.

80Hz is pretty standard and it is also what is used by THX systems. It depends a lot on tastes and the size of your other speakers. Ideally, the crossover point should be the same for the main speakers and the sub, so that one takes over where the other leaves off giving flat response. I would set yours to 80. If you use the crossover on the reciever, then make sure you either turn off the crossover on your sub or turn it all the way up to 120Hz. If you use the crossover on the sub, then make sure you turn off the one in the reciever.

Thanks, Mac, is there a generaly opinion on which crossover to use, the 605 or the sub's? Also, I had heard Direct is better, is this not the case?

I use the crossover on the receiver since it most likely has the same roll-off as the crossover used for the main speakers. The crossover on your sub may not have the same roll-off as the one the receiver uses for your main speakers so I would use the one on your 605.

As for direct, you have to give me a comparison. I'm not sure what else you are refering to. However, that is generally what you should usually use. Post surround processing usually degrades the audio signal more than it helps.

Look at the picture of the back of the sub here: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volum...er-8-2004.html. I'm not sure if I can turn it off on the sub though. As the picture shows it goes from Direct to 40hz. There is no off option.

Direct is the highest, which is where it should be set.

Thanks doby. So, if I have my 605 crossover @100hz for the sub, turn the knob on the sub to Direct, correct?

Yes, direct is the same thing as turning it off.

I also have a Klipsch C-1 center, Klipsch S-1 surrounds, and the Infinity towers here: http://www.infinitysystems.com/home/...USA&Country=US, hooked up to my 605.

The Onkyo's Audessey came up with Full Band for the fronts, 100hz for the center, 120hz for the surrounds, 100hz for LPF of LFE, and Double Bass on. Is this correct? If I change the fronts to 80hz, it turns Double Bass off.

From the responses here, it looks like I should move the LPF of LFE from 100 to 80hz and turn the knob on the back of the sub to direct. Should I change the setting on the other speakers?
