Can I play Blu-Ray without HDCP?

Ok, I bought a HDTV (My first one..) It's a 26" LCD Westinghouse SK-26H520s 720p/1080i model. I read from some guy on a forum that it doesn't support HDCP, but the official site doesn't say one way or another.

Assuming it doesn't have HDCP, is there anyway I can watch Blu-Ray movies? I bought Jay and Silent Bob off of Amazon, and the screen stays black. I can hear audio, but I can't see picture.

If I go into the settings of my PS3, I can change something that says: "BD 1080P 24 Hz Output (HDMI)" to No. After doing this, I can see picture. The only problem is there is a pink overlay. It's watchable, but definitely not "Blu-Ray" or so what I've been told about Blu-Ray.

Anyway, any information/suggestions are appreciated.

This might help:

The symptom you describe for the HDMI connection is usually one where the timing of the transmitter (PS3) and Receiver (Bravia) is "off". This can happen when the two chips negotiate with each other to initially set up communications.

There is only one relatively easy fix ... if it works, then you are lucky. Swapping the cable that interconnects for a shorter or higher quality cable sometimes fixes this problem.

It is possible, depending on vintage of both the TV and the PS3, that they will never talk directly together. The PS3 must be new but if the TV has an older HDMI solution, it may be difficult to solve. (it is possible, if everything in your chain is new and high quality, that you have a defective HDMI chip in one or the other).

If the cable doesn't work, a high quality (and probably expensive) HDMI repeater box might be happy listening to your PS3 and retransmitting to your TV. These kind of boxes are often sold at home theater supply dealers... sometimes as "amplifiers" and sometimes as "splitters". You might find one of these with two inputs and one output as "Switchers" and of course much more complicated solutions.

Unfortunately, HDMI is a "standard" that is changing. there have been three revisions so far and some early chips really don;t like to talk to some later chips.

Issue seems to be that although the Westinghouse 'supports' HDCP, it's a rubbish implementation.

This sucks. I either have to buy the HDFury for $115 or a new HDMI cable for $60.. and no guarantee it'll work. I wish I'd known all this before buying this damn TV. I called their Tech support yesterday and they didn't offer anything other than the normal "I'll have our higher-up tech support call you back.." -- Yeah right.

The only thing I don't understand is why I can watch the movie if I turn that 1080P option off. It has a pink overlay, but the image is clear. The best way I can describe it is if anyone is familiar with photoshop, it's like someone took a pink layer and changed the layer mode to Color. It's not all pink, it just has a translucent pink color over it. I can still see the yellow in Jay's jacket and the blacks in Silent Bob's jacket. It's watchable, but definitely not what I want. I'm going to wait to hear from Westinghouse then decide to buy another damn cable.

This set has component inputs, right? You can get 1080i from your PS3 using the component connection.

I always thought they were more expensive. I didn't buy my HDMI cable. I bought my PS3 used off of craigslist and it came with the HDMI cable.

Anyway, I think I have fixed the problem. I changed something under the PS3 menu to RGB and it works fine. No more pink overlay. I am still using the HDMI cable, though... so I don't know why it works for RGB. Ohwell, I don't care. Blu-Ray seems to be working fine now.

about the problem with the pink overlay...I doubt you've made this mistake but it sounds like a problem I get when I get the component cables mixed up (i.e. blue cord going into the green input/green cord going into the blue input). You might want to check that. Also, if you can resolve this problem using an HDMI, then you should go ahead and try that out. It DOES NOT cost $60 like Clark Kent posted above me...monoprice.com will have super affordable pricing for an HDMI cord (low-end versus high-end has an insignificant difference). Hope this helps...

Blu ray isnt that great on a 26 inch. I had that size on my SDTV. Should consider upgrading in the future.

I got it to work. I had to change one of the settings on the PS3 to RGB eventhough I am using an HDMI cable. Don't know why or what that did, but it comes in clear now.
