I've heard the PQ was some of the best on BD....

as far as the movie goes...I personally give it 2 thumbs up...if you like movies along the lines of "Lock, stock and 2 smoking barrels" and "snatch"...you'll find this is right in the same sort of ballpark with these 2 with the british gangster angle...

I plan on purchasing it...

Yes it does have a Gorgeous PQ and what i like most from our beloved friend review of this BD this quote "The high bitrate MPEG 2 encoding seems to do its job capably though. I was a little surprised at the limited amount of grain for 35mm, considering the profound resolve of so many scenes. Ringing, the bane of DVD, is also a non-issue just as we expect. All-in-all this is a fabulous upgrade from the DVD that possibly for the first time, really reveals how the film was intended to look, whether it's something everyone will find visually stimulating is another question.

One last note, there's a shot early in the film, a slow pan inside a corner store of a shelf with rows of bottled vitamins or something. This should be a good scene for gauging the merits of 24p or a 48Hz refresh, vs the more common 60p. Of course to test, you'll need one of the few current players that actually support the full 24p output or a video processor that can convert the refresh. If the former, you'll also need a 1080p display that'll actually accept 24p or any progressive display that'll accept a 48Hz signal."

I love the movie and am thoroughly pleased with upgrade in PQ. I use optical out, so AQ isn't an issue for me. I had the DVD and found replacing it to be worth it.

I enjoyed the movie and the pq and aq were good. It is similar to snatch and lock stock, two smoking barrels!

I liked it, but the British accents coupled with the quick speaking were, at times, too strong for me and so I watched it with subtitles the first time around to make sure I caught everything.

I basically agree with damandan05 except I'll take it down a couple of notches. I thought the PQ and SQ were excellent but let's be honest, Layer Cake is no Crank or The Departed.

I haven't seen Crank, but the PQ on Layer Cake is miles ahead of the Departed.

Layer Cake is much more British. If you watch a lot of british movies you'll know what I mean. It's a good movie, not an exceptional movie, but a very watchable film. I don't agree the PQ is way better than The Departed. I'm not even sure if I'd say that it is better. It is definitely not as good a movie as The Departed, which you'll soon see.

Still, not a bad pick to add to the library.

Ah... damn it, Butters....

Great flick. It was a blind buy for me when I bought it, too. I really enjoyed it and the BD looks and sounds great.

A good friend of mine recommended the movie about a year ago so I bought the Standard-Def edition and was drawn to it right away. It has such a suave yet edgy feeling that I don't mind watching it multiple times. When the High-Def version came out I purchased it from Best Buy first thing in the morning.

PQ and SQ are great; however, like others have said it is no Crank (still my favorite).

There are a couple of reviews from members of this forum here:

I really liked the movie. But, I'm a "conspiracy" junkie. Daniel Craig acted really well.
