Default PS3 Movie Picture Quality

I've just tried out a couple of Blu-Ray films for the first time (Casino Royale and Click). Both films look 'very' bad when viewed on my Hitachi 42" plasma. In contrast something like Ice Age 2 demo looks amazing. The other two films, look very 'pixelated' and is extremely obvious when paused. The only think I can compare it to is the equivalent of downloading one of the TV rips that are around 380MB for 45 mins episodes. Obviously it's not quite that bad - but you get the point .

I know there's a distinct difference between film and computer-generated material in that the film has 'grain', but to be honest my old Sony DVD player produces a far better picture.

I'm running at 1080i on the PS3 and using an HDMI cable. Is this what to expect of the Blu-Ray quality or could I be missing some configuration settings somewhere? I've looked at the Blu-Ray menu options, but oher than the HDMI and resolution, there doesn't appear to be anything else to adjust.

Any ideas?

Strangely, Casino Royale was supposed to be pure perfection (with the 50 GB Blu-ray disc plus the latest MPEG-4 AVC video codec). It's strange that you're finding it "pixelated".

In any case, we have a lot of AV experts here. They will help you solve you're problems and probably a few calibration tips and advice.

In other words, don't fret as help is on the way.

you may need to adjust the PQ settings, they can be changed for trailers or for BD's. make sure your not watching it at 480P....

I have both Click and Casino Royale on Blu-ray, and I'm playing them on the PS3, output at 1080i via HDMI to a Samsung 32" 1366x768 LCD TV. They both look very much superior to the DVDs of the same movies. Indeed, from my normal viewing position over 10 feet away, my eyes are the bottleneck in picture quality, I have to move to about 6 feet away to get the full benefit of the extra detail in the Blu-ray.

There is noticeable grain in some scenes in both these movies, but I regard the fact that this has been captured from the film negatives as a positive not a negative feature. When I first watched Click on Blu-ray I thought it looked no better than a dvd, and it was only when I switched between the Blu-ray and dvd to properly compare them that I could see how much better it was.

Perhaps try renting one of the movies on dvd so you can switch between them to compare?

I own Casino Royale Blu ray and I thought it was very crisp via PS3 HDMI @ 1080p. "Close to pure perfection" as Blackraven mentions in his post. The movies i didn't find too crisp are Rocky and Young Guns II. I think because they were working with old film? Is that a correct assumption? Since those 2 movies, I hesitate to buy any movies that are "old". Please correct me if I am wrong because I do so want to buy Enter the Dragon. If my assumption is correct then DVD would just be fine for me with regards to those old classic films. Please say it ain't so! LOL

Thanks for the quick replies.

I've played Casino Royale from DVD and it's noticably better. What should the default PS3 settings be? There's not a lot to change to be honest from what I can see.

The resoultion settings are definitely 1080i in the PS3 menu.

That's called film grain and there's nothing you can do about it. It has nothing to do with blu ray. Film grain is a natural part of the film. It's just much more noticable in hd because the increase in resolution exposes much more. Standard 480i and 480p resolution masked alot of the film grain because the image was blurrier.

You say that your DVD on your plasma playing from your PS3 quality is better? WOW! that's weird!

Hopefully you know what your seeing once you read this post.

Attached is a picture showing a small part of the same frame from Click on DVD and Bu-ray, taken by pointing a camera at the TV. The Blu-ray has noticeably more detail. The DVD is a bit darker, which I could have addressed by adjusting the TV to more closely match the Blu-ray, but it doesn't really matter, just ignore that aspect and focus on the difference in detail.

If you're saying that the same movie looks better on DVD than Blu-ray, then there must be some setting somewhere that is wrong. Are they both connected via HDMI, if not could it be a difference in how your TV is handling the inputs?

HyperVizor, your Casino Royale should be looking as good as this if not better:

Casino Royale

I see no pixelation there.

Apart that there's no pixelation there, so this is "off topic" in a sense , I shall mention that when you pause things, they look noisier because you halt the blending of the grain the eye/brain does when watching randomly moving 24fps grain (or noise in the case of video)

I would have to say that casino royale in blu-ray looks amazing. I have Click, but I havn't watched it in blu-ray yet. (I have seen it before) One thing you can try to do is try 720p for action movies and 1080i for drama and comedies. The reason is how the data is transformed acrossed the screen. I'm sure it has nothing to do with your PS3. There is a difference between p and i, one transfers data onto the screen vertical and one horizontal. I forget how it goes but like I said someone said that p is more for action and i is more for like drama and comedy. Someone please comment on this b/c I would even like to know more!

Cool

I agree that you need to buy a Sony LCD to really see the difference. I have a 46" Sony Bravia LCD and with 1080p, HDMI hookup, Casino Royale looks amazing.

Default Casino Royale

I'm getting a PS3 in exactly a week from now and I have Casino Royale on Blu-ray already. I have heard conflicting reviews of the picture quality of this movie. Some say it's really good, others say the contrast is too hot. I was wondering if you can tell the difference in picture quality right from the beginning of the movie in the black and white teaser, and also about the quality of the animated credit sequence.

The animated beginning is just amazing even though they took out all the nude women.

And the black and white is intentionally grainy to set a mood.

I think it will have a lot to do with your television.

I was pretty happy with the entire film.

I rented from Netflix last week and I was very impressed with the movie. The contrast was fine and the opinion that the contrast is too hot is probably due to the fact that High Dynamic Range lighting is a new concept for most and they are just not used to seeing it. I plan on buying a copy soon.

I agree, it's most likely your tv. Casino Royale looks amazing on my tv's, as do almost all the other blu-rays.
