I haven't heard of 10.2 before, that sounds awesome, and very, very expensive.

this is great if you have a decent size room to support it.

Denon & Yamaha both make 9.1 systems, $7.2K & $4.5k. Spliting up a Sub line to Left/Right is not a big deal. The sub that I have, in the back has a L/R digital coaxial Sub input

What you're saying! I think 7.1 is even too much for a standard-sized room. Thank god it's not for mine.

And mine. I have L & R inputs via unbalanced and a high level Neutrik connection too.

Two subs is ok, but frankly unnecessary as the issue of wave cancellation could negate the sub frequencies.

And it's darned expensive too!

Plus it's very unlikely you'll notice any directional difference from the frequencies that good subs handle.

but if you use several (multi) subs the uneven standing waves might even out

A few thoughts...

I think this would theoretically be just as good for small rooms as big rooms. I actually prefer nearfield listening. When the recording and engineering is done right (and your setup is done right), it can easily convince you that you're in a much bigger space.

But I am skeptical because I don't see a return on investment. For those few big-budget movies where a sound engineer really does this right, records great audio and assigns each sound to the proper channel, 10.2 could be incredible. But how many movies will that be? Engineers often can't do a good job in traditional two channel stereo or 5.1, let alone 7.1. I would not like to spend junior's inheritence on a killer 10.2 setup that would only really pay off for a couple movies a year.

I say let the industry get 7.1 right and I'll be plenty happy with that.

Oh, and about the wires, you can always go behind the walls or under the carpet. Still, to really optimize this you would need to build a room with plans that account for all 10.2 channels.
