TX-SR605 Firmware Update
for both the TX-SR605 and TX-SR605S

A firmware update for the TX-SR605 is now available through Onkyo’s Independent Regional Service Centers. This update will address the product’s ability to decode the Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD High Resolution and Master Audio bit stream signals when products incorporating this capability become available in the market.

This update affects only a limited number of early production TX-SR605 units. Onkyo has included this update in all later production models. To determine if your unit is one of the few affected units please enter the 10 digit product serial number below.

If your unit is eligible for this update, it will be done free of charge. You must follow the instruction on this and the following pages to receive the prepaid return mailing label. Units received without this label will not be processed.

We wish you many years of enjoyment with your TX-SR605 and its HD capabilities.

is this a new firmware just released or is this the firmware for the 605 that has been out for a while now?

edit:this looks like the old firmware. this really has nothing to do with the bitstream bomb

I dunno...it specifically mentions the problems with decoding via bitstreaming on early units. Plus this recently went up and don't remember seeing it when I visited the support section of the website a couple of weeks ago.

Onkyo seems to have fixed the DTS HD-MA issue according to AreaDVD.de

Quote:
Onkyo: AV-Receiver Firmware-Update behebt "Knall-Effekte" mit DTS HD
27.03.2008 (ks)

It says you can contact Onkyo for a CD to fix this issue or take your Amp to an authorized dealer which can acces the firmware update through the onkyo homepage.

You think all Onkyo's have the same chip and therefor it won't matter if you'll load an EU firmware update into your US version?

Definately not a good idea...

Plus I'm sure this will void the warranty if it damages the receiver...

Yep sorry, just did a search and found a 11/2007 post stating the same thing. Of course maybe they are re-utilizing the same blurb on their website just for a general firmware update and not specifically to a certain revision number but to an update in general. (???) Has anyone got a response back from Onkyo?

no one really knows. if you follow the forum about this at avs, some say its a dsp firmware and its all the same. but when those in the u.s. update thier firmware, the receiver doesnt follow the directions, meaninig it doesnt shut off like its suppose to, or freezes and more tinkering is done. then it works. there isnt a concrete answer as to wether or not there will be side afffects later on. sure the bomb is gone now, but is something else changed? no one knows. but some are confident enough to risk it.

either way, its always said that no one is responsible if you brick your unit! that being said, is it worth it? i dont think so.

It means you don't have to update your Reciever as it's all done within the PS3

thats all fine and dandy for those who always plan on using a ps3 to play blus. not everyone is. i plan on getting a stand alone. as it stands the ps3 cannot even decode dts ma. and yes it is a big issue but its one that is getting fixed. defects happen all the time in everything

The DTS-HD MA flaw seems to be fixed with the Yamaha and Onkyo/Integra receivers. The fix is an firmware update to the receivers/pre's DSP chips. However, the fix has not been "formally" announced to the US market.

In the case of Onkyo/Integra, my friend has already applied the firmware update to his Onkyo 885 Pre (I think that's the model number but it is basically the same as Integra DTC-9.8). After testing, he confirmed that the firmware update fixed the DTS-HD MA "pop" problem. Additionally this update solved an audio delay issue that is not really a problem but more of an annoyance. The best way to describe the issue is it takes a few seconds for the audio to sync up when changing channels when watching DirecTV or cable.

If you want to learn all about this issue head to AVS Forum: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1008620. These guys are very impressive the way they attacked the problem to get a quick fix.

I am waiting for Onkyo/Integra to formally announce and deliver the solution before I start upgrading my Pre's firmware.

be careful... it appears the reason why the Onkyo and Yamahas have the problem is that they are using TI DSPs iso Analog Devices which Denon uses (dunno about Sony, they might be using their own).

As far as I can gather, this is what appears to be what's going on.

There is a difference between a firmware update and the DSP update. The Onkyo's firmware can only be upgraded thru a serial cable from a PC. The firmware MAY be different in different regions.

The DSPs are upgraded via an optical cable from a CD. The DSPs SHOULD be the same no matter the region as all the DSPs do is decode signals. A DTS signal in Europe is still a DTS signal.

I cannot be certain if the above is entirely accurate but it seems to be the logical answers to the many posts on the internet.

if you follow the thread at avs, people are updating thier u.s. units with european firmware. downloading and burning to a disc. then playing it with an optical cable with a compatible cd player. nothing has been confirmed for u.s. yet. the problem is what your saying cannot be verified. people are using the update and say at your own risk

"should be"? out of the dozens of posts i read this from, can there be a verified link somewhere? its kinda hard to take the word of faceless people i dont know (no offense) and then "at my own risk" with a possibility of bricking my unit
