Just got a call from my dealer....my DTC 9.8 arrived today.

I doubt the problem has been fixed yet...guess I am going to be the proud owner of one of these problem units....

Can you wait for another batch that have been confirmed to be fixed? That's what I would do if I were you.

We'll see - I pointed the dealer to the problem and emailed Onkyo/Integra about this.

I should also add that my plan is for the player to do the decoding anyway, so I am not affected by this right now.

But who knows if in the future if I want to bitstream for some reason...it's just good to know that this problem was eliminated.

chances are that the DTS decoder chip is an integrated circuit which means it is not re-programmable. Since the ICs are normally soldered to the circuit board it is not likely replaceable unless the whole board is replaced. Which means that only Onkyo will be able to fix the issue. Unless DTS or Onkyo does a recall (which I seriously doubt), I would not use the affected receivers to decode DTS signals. As usual, the consumers got screwed.

Update for Onkyo/Integra owners....firmware 1.08 fixes other issues and may also address the DTS-MA problem:

Quote:
1.08 installed
A short while ago, my 905 was upgraded with the "release candidate" 1.08 firmware. I could not do this myself - it had to be performed by technicians. The process took about 1 hour.

There were three steps - two updates done from laptop via RS-232, and one done from an external optical disc connected to the 905 (I could not see if this was via an optical connected or via the special service connector next to the component inputs.

I've had very little time to play since, but hear are some observations (subject to change as I spend more time with it)

- EVERYTHING is wiped on the unit - Audyssey, presets, custom names, etc.
- FIX! Audio lock on is instaneous - no more three or four seconds of silence as it tries to lock onto a different audio stream
- FIX! I can turn my HDMI connected Sony XBR2 SXRD OFF and not lose audio after 2 minutes.
- I did a quick 3-position Audyssey calibration. Soundfield is noticeably richer, which before sounded thin (I ended up bypassing Audyssey and used manual EQ) Now low and mid frequencies sound much more realistic and have better presence. The technicians said Audyssey itself was not updated, but when I indicated about the better soundfield, they both smiled and referenced the DSP upgrade.

They indicated this upgrade *is supposed* to address the DTS bitstream bomb issue - that is one reason why it is still being tested/verified as opposed to being released formally. He did indicated that he played Close Encounters DTS-MA and could not get the bomb to appear on their test unit.

The issue of end-user install vs. service center install seems to be up in the air right now, primarily driven by the fact that there are three update files, and two methodologies (RS-232 and optical disc) Also unsure if the third upgrade file can be passed via optical or needs to be connected to the special service port. I suppose that's one of the technical issues under review.
I am supposed to pick up my DTC 9.8 this weekend, I have asked the dealer to check if it has 1.08 installed and if not to get it installed...

since there was no quote to see who he was responding to, its safe to assume he was referring to posts right before his and all those right before his was referring to onkyo. then again "any u.s. products" means yamaha and onkyo.

if by any chance any information is wrong, please let us know. im waiting to hear for updates on onkyos firmware

Mine has fw version 1.07. My dealer said that 1.08 is not available yet, so I think you are right.

It comes in a tube of paste.

No seriously, most of them have some sort of port, USB, serial, etc. that a dealer can plug into and upgrade them. On some units it may be inside.

This is from Onkyo's website for firmware fix. No word yet on the 805...

TX-SR605 Firmware Update
for both the TX-SR605 and TX-SR605S

A firmware update for the TX-SR605 is now available through Onkyo’s Independent Regional Service Centers. This update will address the product’s ability to decode the Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD High Resolution and Master Audio bit stream signals when products incorporating this capability become available in the market.

This update affects only a limited number of early production TX-SR605 units. Onkyo has included this update in all later production models. To determine if your unit is one of the few affected units please enter the 10 digit product serial number below.

If your unit is eligible for this update, it will be done free of charge. You must follow the instruction on this and the following pages to receive the prepaid return mailing label. Units received without this label will not be processed.

We wish you many years of enjoyment with your TX-SR605 and its HD capabilities.
