Disney The Prestige (2006)

Hi there,

I finally got my copy of "The Prestige", and when I ripped open the mail and looked at the cover, I noticed that the cover lagged the classic buena vista look with the silver linings.

With a short closer inspection, I could conclude I had gotten the Warner Brothers distrib of the movie which is the only one currently available as a [UK] release in Region B.

What the hell is wrong with Warner? I am sitting here with an extremely expensive copy of The Prestige (prices in EU vs US are messed up), and I get low bitrate VC-1 encode and Dolby Digital. No, not even DD+.
We are talking plain old Dolby Digital.

Now - so with a price tag equalling 56 USD for the Prestige, and a copy far inferior to the US - what am I to do?
It should have been made bloody illegal to rape movie releases like warner does.

I find it hard to cope with the insane prices in the EU, but I can live with it - its like with everything else, our price tags are lightyears higher than the ones in the US for the equal product - but when we also get the inferior release, ive just had it.
Now, would anyone please enlighten me, is the Buena Vista AVC+PCM release of "The Prestige" region open to region B?

Thank you for reading all this whine.

Buy yourself a region A player and save all the money on the next 20 Blu movies you buy

I'm buying one myself, but havent decided what model yet. Prices here in Norway are just insane. Ordering region A releases through eBay I get the movies at 50% of the lowest price I can get them here.

But you, living in norway, are not bound by the same restrictions we are in the EU. ):

well, if the Buena Vista is region locked, I am out of luck and will have to live with this stupid VC-1 crap.

Haha! I am SO happy I woted NO to joining EU then

But here is a thought...if you know anyone living in the US you could make them send you a player marked as a gift for customs declaration?

Thats what I do on big stuff at least since I have a brother living in Las Vegas. So my plan is to make him buy the player, get the free BD's...unwrap everything and then send it to me as a used player

Unbelievable. you know, they passed a law with the same restrictions for Switzerland a couple of years ago. It was intended to protect Swiss filmmakers and distribution companies. It was withdrawn shortly after (thank goodness), so there is hope for you guys as well...?

I just saw the UK version and I was more than a little disappointed by the PQ.
Lots of EE.

I'm only viewing it on my laptop, but zoomed in, I couldn't see a difference between any of those screens, and I usually can view other movies on this computer.

There's a slight difference in grain structure and it favors the U.S. release. However, it's not worth importing from the U.S. unless you can get it for cheap IMHO.

Or if I'm in the US and already have the US disc, I have no worries.

Correct. It's the folks in region B or C that might want to import if they can get it for cheap and have a region free player.

Maybe this is just the look of Nolan films on BD. The Dark Knight and Batman Begins sort of have the same less than stellar quality to them.

Wait. What? So Amazon.com won't/can't ship to your country? I find that hard to believe. Surely this ban doesn't impede mail-order?

We do have something like that in Norway too, where shops can't sell foreign releases of films without them being pre-approved by the state censor. But that doesn't apply to privately imported media from overseas e-tailers.

Besides, Blu-rays are dirt-cheap from Amazon.co.uk or Play.com, and they are both in the EU. The UK prices blow the US prices away.
